This time, I would like to share a story about how I sank – quite literally – into an ice skating rink. Looking back, the first time I suddenly broke through the ice was a bit frightening, and my feet became very wet and cold. However, these days, even if I sink through the ice several times a day, it no longer bothers me – in fact, it often turns into a moment me and other people at the rink can laugh about. This probably sounds awkward, so let me explain.

今回は、私がスケートリンクに落ちて沈んだ話をご紹介します。初めてズボッと落ちたときは少し怖く、足もかなり濡れて冷えました。しかし、最近は一日に何回はまっても平気で、逆に笑ってしまうことさえよくあります。さて、これは一体何の話かわかりますか？

Kawamata Tambo Rink / かわまた田んぼリンク

More than 40 years ago, in the Yamakiya district of Kawamata Town (northern Fukushima), a handmade skating rink was created on a rice field by local volunteers and the Yamakiya Sports Promotion Association. Established to provide sports education opportunities for local children, it was named the “Kinu no Sato Skating Rink”. In summer, the site was an ordinary rice field, but in winter it was carefully transformed into a skating rink to create a suitable place for speed skating practice. Some athletes who later competed in the National Sports Festivals were trained at this rural rink.

40年以上も前に、福島県の県北地方にある川俣町の山木屋地区に、地域の有志と山木屋体育振興会によって、田んぼを活かした手作りのスケートリンクが設立されました。地域の子どもたちにスポーツ教育の機会を提供したいという思いから、「絹の里スケートリンク」がスタート。夏は普通の田んぼですが、冬は水を入れて子どもたちがスピードスケートの練習ができるリンクを作りました。実は、この田舎のスケートリンクから、国体に出場した選手も育ちました。

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, the rink temporarily closed and reopened in 2016. As the community aged, however, it became difficult to continue operations with the same members alone. In 2022, the rink was renamed the “Kawamata Tambo Rink,” and people from outside the local area also became involved in its operation, and I am one of them. Running this rice-field skating rink is an activity unique to rural Japan, which in my mind strongly reflects the character of Fukushima.

2022年に、「かわまた田んぼリンク」に名前を変え、地域以外の人たちもリンクを担うようになりました。私もその一人です。田んぼリンクの運営は、日本の田舎でしかできない楽しい活動で、福島らしさを強く感じます。

Skating Rink Making / リンク作り

Rink preparation begins in December. Water is pumped into the rice field and left to freeze over the New Year period, then plenty of water is sprayed nightly over white sheets laid on the ice. We also clear snow in the mornings before visitors arrive. As this is a natural rink, we work while closely monitoring weather conditions. Each day, we check the ice thickness to decide whether the rink can open and carry out maintenance even in the very corners and along the edges where visitors are usually not allowed to enter. On warmer days, thinner ice in these places may make a crackling sound. However, as long as it is only this “crackling sound”, there is no need to worry yet.

リンク作りは12月に始まります。まず、田んぼに水を入れ、年末年始にしっかり凍らせます。その後、表面に敷いた白いシートの上から毎晩水を撒きます。天然のリンクで、天候と向き合いながら作業します。スケーターが滑るエリアは、氷の厚さを確認したうえでその日の営業可否を判断します。また、スケーターは立ち入らない隅の方でも、私たちはメンテナンスのために入っていきます。暖かい日には、氷が薄いところまで進むと「パチパチ」と音がします。でも、「パチパチ」だけであれば心配する必要はありません。

What you really need to worry about is hearing a sharp “CRACK!” – a quick, snapping sound. When the ice breaks, you have only about two seconds to react. I clearly remember the first time the ice cracked beneath my feet; within those two seconds, I dropped straight into the cold water. Because the ice lies over a rice field, the water underneath is only knee-deep at most. Still, when you fall in like that, water gets inside your rubber boots, and you become cold very quickly. That said, since we work on a natural rink, I eventually came to see it as something you can only experience in the countryside. In fact, because you never know exactly when you might sink through the ice, it can even feel fun at times.

をいう音を聞いたときです。

初めて氷が足の下で割れた時、ちょうど2秒でズボッと水の中に落ちた記憶があります。氷の下は田んぼなので、深さは膝位ですが、ズボッと落ちると長靴の中が濡れるので一気に凍えます。天然のリンクで作業しているので、「これも田舎だからこそ体験できるもの」と、そのうちに思えるようになりました。いつはまるか分からないだけに、むしろ楽しく感じることもあります。

However, after gaining more experience since 2022, we began to think about how to avoid falling into the water when the ice breaks beneath someone’s feet. We learned that if you hear a sharp cracking sound, it is better not to wait even two seconds but to throw your whole body forward immediately; this way, your feet do not get wet. Unfortunately, the rubber boots do sink, but your feet slip right out of them within those two seconds. Still, I cannot help wondering what people who witness this scene might think about us.

でも、2022年から経験を重ねて、ズボッと落ちそうになったときの対策を考えました。「パキッ」という音が聞こえたら、2秒経たないうちに、その場で一気に前へ倒れると足が濡れません。残念ながら長靴は沈みますが、足は長靴からスポンと抜けるのです。ただ、この様子を見た人が、どのように感じるのかは気になります。

Season 2026 / 2026シーズン

This season is scheduled to begin around mid-January 2026 (of course, only areas where the ice has formed sufficiently and is confirmed to be safe are opened to the public). For beginners we provide support chairs. In addition, visitors can try curling or bowling using Japanese traditional pickle stones.

今シーズンは、2026年1月中旬頃にリンクがオープンします。もちろん、氷が十分に張った、安全なエリアのみを開放します。スケート初心者には補助椅子の利用をおすすめします。また、田舎ならではの遊びとして、漬物石を使ったカーリングやボウリングも体験できます。

This year, "Kawamata Tambo Rink" will host a winter festival, the “Ice Festival,” on January 31. The event will feature night skating, a performance by “Yamakiya Taiko Drums”, a skating show and skating lessons, warm food, and a fireworks display. This winter, we invite you to experience a slightly unusual skating rink and enjoy the unique atmosphere of a countryside winter festival.

さらに、かわまた田んぼリンクでは1月31日に冬祭り「氷祭」を開催します。ナイトリンクに加え、山木屋太鼓の演奏、スケートショーやスケート教室、温かい料理の提供、そして打ち上げ花火など、催しが盛りだくさんの内容です。田舎ならではの冬祭りの雰囲気を味わってみませんか？

Kawamata Tambo Rink Vision / かわまた田んぼリンクのビジョン

I received a comment from Mr. Sasaki, the Representative of the “Kawamata Tambo Rink”:

“About ten years ago I had no connection to Yamakiya, but later I became involved with the area because of the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear disaster in 2011. The rice field rink was what first drew me to visit regularly. Since 2022, we have taken on running it from local residents and now handle it together with people from both inside and outside the district. The rink is heavily affected by the weather, and things rarely go as planned, but that unpredictability is part of its charm. Suddenly appearing along the national road, the exposed rink has a mysterious presence. I hope it will be a place of lasting memories for those who grew up here and a unique winter experience for visitors from outside the town. Each season, we also organize activities, workshops, and fireworks, and beginners are very welcome here.”

「約10年前まで私は山木屋とは全く縁がなかったのですが、2011年の東日本大震災・原子力災害を契機にかかわりを持つようになりました。そして山木屋に通うようになったきっかけが、田んぼリンクでした。2022年に、地区の皆様から引き継ぎ、現在は地区内外の仲間とともに運営を行っています。田んぼのリンクは、天候に左右されやすく、物事が計画通りに運ぶということがありません。ですが、だからこその魅力があると思っています。国道を走っていると、突然見えてくるむき出しのリンクは、なんとも言えない不思議な存在感を持っています。このリンクが、地区で育った人たちにとって思い出の場所であり、町外からお越しくださる方にとっては不思議な冬のひと時の場所となる、そんないろいろな思い出が集まる場所になればと思っています。毎シーズン、遊びやワークショップ、花火などのイベントも企画しています。スケート初心者の方もぜひお越しください。」
