Kaneyama Town was my first ever destination in Aizu. I went there as an exchange student and helped shovel snow with other students. The scenery I saw in Kaneyama that day has stayed with me ever since. Along streets lined with houses, the snow was so deep that it was hard to tell where one home ended and the next began. Snow had piled up to the level of the second floor, and the roofs looked as if they were topped with huge white hats.

私は会津に行ったのは金山町が最初でした。8年前に交換留学生として訪れ、他の学生と本格的な雪かきを体験しました。あの日、金山町で見た景色は今でも忘れられません。民家が並ぶ通りでは、隣家との境目がほとんどわからないほど雪に覆われていました。２階の高さまで雪が積もり、屋根はまるで真っ白な帽子をかぶっているように見えました。

We helped clear snow from houses and storage sheds. There was so much snow that we did not even know where to begin. I carved steps into the snow and finally climbed up to the second-floor level. Being careful not to hit anyone below, I kept tossing the snow down. I remember feeling that no matter how much snow I cleared, it never seemed to decrease. When the roof finally began to appear and I looked down, I saw another student shoveling away the snow steps I had made to climb back down. I shouted, “Hey! I’m still up here! Do you want me trapped up here until spring or what?” and that set everyone off laughing.

私たち学生は民家や倉庫などの除雪を手伝いました。あまりの積雪量に、どこから手を付ければいいのかわからないほどでした。それでも私は雪で階段を作り、２階の高さまでやっと登りました。下にいる人に気を付けながら、どんどん雪を落としました。どれだけ落としても眼の前の雪は減りません。ようやく屋根が見え始めた時に見下ろすと、２階から降りるために作った雪の階段がない…なんと下にいた学生が除雪していたのです。「おーい！まだ上にいるよ！春まで閉じ込められたくないよ！」と声をかけて、皆で大笑いになりました。

After the work was done, we were treated to warm, hearty home-style dishes prepared by local residents. In today’s Japan, many areas are highly mechanized and equipped with snow-melting systems, but I came to realize how demanding the winters must be for people living in the mountainous parts of Aizu. Even so, I could not help but think about how beautiful the snow was.

作業が終わると、地域の方々が用意してくださった温かくておいしい田舎料理をいただき、心も体も満たされました。現在の日本は機械化が進み、消雪パイプが整備されている地域も多いですが、会津の山間部で暮らしている方々の冬のご苦労は非常に大きいと感じました。でも、やっぱり雪はきれいだな、と同時に思いました。

Because of this experience, I feel that Aizu is the ideal place to enjoy winter scenery. There are many well-known spots that are especially beautiful in winter, including Tsuruga Castle and Nanokamachi Street in Aizuwakamatsu City, Ōuchi-juku in Shimogō Town, and the Tadami Railway Line. These destinations attract many visitors because they are relatively easy to reach and popular photo spots, making them an easy and memorable choice for first-time visitors.

この経験から、福島で雪景色を楽しみたいなら、会津地方が最適だと思います。例えば、会津若松市の鶴ヶ城や七日町通り、下郷町の大内宿、只見線など、冬になると特に美しい場所が多く、どれも有名な観光地です。アクセスが比較的簡単で、写真スポットとしても人気が高く、多くの観光客に選ばれていることから、初めての方でも快適に雪の旅を楽しめます。

In addition, many towns and villages across the Aizu region hold winter festivals. For local residents, these festivals are special events that brighten the long, cold days. Smaller winter festivals are often where you can experience traditional games and local activities that are difficult to find elsewhere. Right now is the winter festival season, so be sure to check the websites of towns that catch your eye.

また、会津地方の市町村では冬まつりが数多く開催されます。冬まつりはその地方に暮らす人にとって、寒さが続く日々を明るく彩るイベントでもあります。地方の冬まつりでこそ、伝統的な遊びや他ではなかなか体験できない催しに出合えます。ちょうどこの時期が冬まつりのシーズンです。ぜひ気になるまちのホームページをチェックしてみてください。
