Michael Fanconi was born in Northern California. He left the U.S. at 28 and has now lived 23 years in Japan. Two and a half years ago, he and his wife moved to Kawamata Town in Fukushima Prefecture. Michael currently runs a “yakuzen” (medicinal food) café called “Bonchi Taro” with his wife and teaches English part-time.

マイケル・ファンコー二さんは北カリフォルニアで生まれ、28歳の時にアメリカを出てすでに23年間日本に住んでいます。2年半前に福島県川俣町に移住し、奥様と一緒に町内で「Bonchi Taro」という薬膳カフェを運営しています。さらに、パートタイムで英語を教えています。

Q: Could you tell me about the climate in your hometown? Was it similar to the prefectures you’ve lived so far in Japan?
A: In my hometown, summers are hot and dry – you can get sunburned quickly. Winters are cold and dry, with snow only occasionally. Japan is very different. I first lived in Kanazawa City (Ishikawa Prefecture), it was cloudy, rainy, and humid, but with really cold winters and heavy, wet snow, which I loved for snowboarding. Then in Chigasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture), there was a lot of sun but no snow, which was a bit sad. Now in Fukushima Prefecture, it’s cold with proper snowfall – just how I like it.

Q：ふるさとの気候について教えてください。今まで住んできた他の県と似ていますか？
A：生まれ育ったところは、夏が暑く、乾燥しているため、すぐに日焼けしてしまうような気候です。冬も乾燥して寒いですが、雪はたまにしか降りません。日本の気候は全く違います。最初に住んでいた石川県金沢市は、くもりや雨の日が多く、湿度が高いのに、冬はとても寒くて、重たく湿った雪がどっさり降りました。スノーボードが好きな私には、石川県の冬がよく合いました。その後、神奈川県の茅ヶ崎市に移住しましたが、冬は日差しが強く、雪がほとんど降らなかったので寂しく感じました。今住んでいる福島県は冬が寒く、しっかり雪も降るので私にぴったりです。

Q: And what made you move to Fukushima prefecture? Did you consider other places?
A: We lived in Chigasaki City for five years, but there were no snow or mountains, and life felt hectic with busy people and cars everywhere. I missed the nature of Ishikawa Prefecture, with its beautiful mountains and rivers. We looked at many prefectures and rural towns, because we wanted a slower lifestyle, and my wife suggested Fukushima. At first, I didn’t know much and even thought it might be dangerous, but after reading research papers, I realized the negative image came mostly from the media. When we drove here for the first time, the scenery slowly changed – suddenly there were endless green trees and mountains, and the highway was straight and stress-free. I was amazed at how beautiful Fukushima City looked with all the mountains surrounding it. When we came to Kawamata Town, it just felt right: we had found the perfect place.

Q：福島県に移住したきっかけは何ですか？他の県も検討していましたか？
A：茅ヶ崎市には5年間住んでいました。雪も山もほとんどない上、周りの人が皆忙しく、しかも車が多くて、どこか落ち着かない日々でした。石川県で楽しんでいた綺麗な山や川のある自然が恋しくなりました。もっとゆったりした暮らしをしたくて、様々な県や田舎の町を調べていました。そのとき妻が「福島はどう？」と提案してくれました。最初は福島県についてあまり知らず、少し不安でしたが、アメリカと日本の論文を読むうちに、メディアで伝えられていた悪いイメージは実際とはかなり違うことがわかりました。初めて車で来たときに、景色がゆっくり変わっていき、一面の緑と山々に囲まれていることに気づきました。高速道路はまっすぐで、運転が楽でした。福島市の盆地の景色を見たときは、山に囲まれたその美しさにとても感動しました。そして川俣町に来てみると、「ここだ」と直感しました。まさに私たちにぴったりの場所だと思いました。

Q: What do you like about living here?
A: I like the food and nature in Fukushima, but the best thing is the people. Everyone is friendly, open, and easy to talk to. In Ishikawa Prefecture, it was a bit more difficult to get close to people, and in Chigasaki City everyone was nice but busy. I met great people in both places, but I wanted a slower lifestyle. Here in Fukushima, even convenience store staff chat with us, and even serious town hall workers are friendly. People wave and smile a lot, it feels warm and welcoming. The local community has been very supportive, and when we said we wanted to open a café everyone cheered us on.

Q：福島で暮らしみて、どんなところが気に入っていますか？
A：福島は食べ物も自然も最高ですが、一番気に入っているのは「人」です。皆フレンドリーで、気軽に話せる人が多いと感じます。石川県のときは少し人との距離を縮めにくく、茅ヶ崎市では優しい人が多かったものの、皆忙しそうでした。どちらでも素敵な出会いがたくさんありましたが、私はよりゆっくりした暮らしを望んでいました。福島では、コンビニの店員さんが気軽に声をかけてくれたり、役場の職員さんも気さくに話してくれます。すれ違う人が手を振ってくれたり、笑顔であいさつしてくれたりして、とても温かい雰囲気です。地域の人たちも本当に協力的で、「カフェを開きたい」と話したときも応援してくれました。

Q: That is really true – I feel the same about Fukushima. What do you usually do outside of work here?
A: I practice jujitsu all year round and also like to work out and go running when the weather is warm. Sometimes I go to the coast or play music. And in winter, it’s all about snowboarding!

Q：よくわかります。私も福島では同じような温かさを感じています。休みの日に、普段どんなことをしていますか？
A：一年中柔術の練習を続けていますが、暖かい季節には筋トレやランニングも楽しんでいます。ときどき海へ出かけたり、楽器を演奏したりします。そして冬は、スノーボードに決まっています！

Q: That’s impressive! Did you play any sports when you were a child? And when did you start snowboarding?
A: When I was young, I played baseball, American football, wrestled, skateboarded, and did track and field. I started skiing when I was about eight years old and loved it. But when I tried snowboarding for the first time at eighteen it wasn’t that fun: I thought skateboarding was cooler back then. However, after trying snowboarding in Utah (U.S.), where the snow was incredible, I fell in love with it.

Q：スゴイですね！子どもの頃はどんなスポーツをしていましたか？それから、スノーボードはいつ始めたのですか？
A：子どもの頃は野球、アメフト、レスリング、スケートボード、さらにトラック&フィールド※もしていました。8歳の頃にスキーを始め、すぐに夢中になりました。ただ、18歳の時に初めてスノーボードを試したときは、そこまで感動しませんでした。当時、スケートボードの方がかっこいいと思っていたのです。でもその後、アメリカのユタ州で滑ってみたら、雪の質がすばらしく、その瞬間に一気にスノーボードにハマりました。

Q: Which ski resorts do you go in Fukushima Prefecture? What’s your favorite place at the moment?
A: I’ve visited about five or six resorts in Japan. In Fukushima I really liked Minowa Ski Resort – though it’s temporarily closed now – and Inawashiro Ski Resort, which is my current favorite.

Q：福島県では、どこのスキー場によく行きますか？お気に入りの場所はありますか？
A：日本ではこれまで5〜6カ所のスキー場に行ったことがあります。福島では「箕輪スキー場」が好きでしたが、今は休業中です。現在、「猪苗代スキー場」が一番のお気に入りです。

Q: What do you find appealing about it?
A: Overall, it’s a great place. It’s easy to reach by car, and the route is simple. They often have campaigns, like free or half-price days for club members, so it’s worth checking. The first time, I booked everything on my phone and just showed a QR code at the entrance. It’s not crowded; the longest I’ve waited for a lift is five minutes. The staff are friendly, the food is good, and the snow is usually fine – sometimes a bit icy, but that’s due to the weather. There are courses for all levels, including challenging ones for advanced riders. I usually bring my own gear, but rentals are available.

Q：「猪苗代スキー場」のどんなところが気に入っていますか？
A：全体的にとてもいいスキー場です。車で行きやすく、道もシンプルで迷いません。会員向けの無料デーや半額デーなどのキャンペーンもよくあるのでお得に楽しめます。初めて行ったときは、スマホで予約し、入り口でQRコードを表示するだけでスムーズに入場できました。混雑も少なく、リフトの待ち時間は長くても5分ほどです。スタッフも親切で、食事もおいしいです。雪の状態は基本的に良く、たまにアイスバーン気味の日もありますが、それは天気次第です。コースは初心者から上級者まで幅広くあります。私は普段自分のウエアとボードを持って行きますが、レンタルサービスもあります。

Q: Are there any differences with ski resorts abroad?
A: In Japan, ski resorts are more beautiful, mainly because they are so clean. And as I mentioned, the staff here are usually more cheerful and welcoming.

Q：海外のスキー場と比べて、何が違いますか？
A：日本のスキー場はアメリカより清潔で、きれいに整備されています。また、スタッフが明るくてフレンドリーなのも日本ならではだと思います。

Q: What should a beginner prepare for their first time?
A: Definitely good warm socks – don’t underestimate them. Bring a hat, gloves, goggles if you have them, a scarf, and a face mask. I also recommend thermal underwear. The most important tip is to stay dry. Many beginners wear regular casual clothes that don’t repel snow, ending up cold and wet. And expect to feel sore after your first time, so take it easy and rest when you feel tired.

Q：初めてスキーやスノーボードをしに行くとき、何を準備すればいいですか？
A：まずは暖かくて厚手の靴下を用意してください。いい靴下は意外と重要です。帽子や手袋、ゴーグル、マフラーやフェイスマスクがあると安心です。さらに、保温インナーもおすすめです。一番大事なのは体を濡らさないことです。初めての方は、つい普段のカジュアルな服で滑ってしまうときがあります。雪が洋服に染み込むと濡れてしまい、さらに寒く感じることがあるので注意してください。それから、初心者は筋肉が痛くなることがよくあるので、無理せず疲れたら休むことが大切です。

Q: Great tips! How do you feel when you’re snowboarding? What do you enjoy the most about it?
A: It’s the best feeling ever. I love snowboarding itself and being outside in nature, with the crisp, clean air. It’s a fun, peaceful activity that gives a great sense of freedom.

Q：おすすめありがとうございます！スノーボードをしているときはどんな気分ですか？何が一番楽しいですか？
A：本当に最高の気分です。スノーボード自体も大好きですし、自然の中で新鮮な空気を吸いながら滑るのが何より気持ちいいです。スノーボードは楽しくて、私にとっては心がリフレッシュするスポーツで、滑っているときに感じる「自由」が一番の魅力です。

Q: And the last one: what is your goal for this season?
A: I want to go snowboarding as many times as possible and explore other ski resorts – Fukushima Prefecture has so many to try.

Q：最後の質問です。今シーズンの目標は何ですか？
A：今シーズンは、できるだけたくさんスノーボードをして、いろいろなスキー場を回りたいです。福島県にはまだ挑戦してみたいスキー場がたくさんあります。
