In this article, I would like to introduce the Nishiaizu Snow Country Festival (“Nishiaizu Yukiguni Matsuri”), a beloved event enjoyed not only by local residents but also by many visitors from outside the town. Held for the 36th time in 2026, it is one of Nishiaizu Town’s signature events.

本記事では、地元の方はもちろん、町外からの来場者にも親しまれている「西会津雪国まつり」をご紹介します。2026年に第36回を迎えるこの祭りは、西会津町を代表するイベントの一つです。

The Nishiaizu Snow Country Festival is designed to be active and fun for all ages. Beyond live music, local food, winter illuminations, and fireworks, the festival stands out for its hands-on activities that are difficult to find elsewhere. Over the years it has featured playful events such as races in “fumidawara” (giant winter straw shoes) and “centipede skiing,” while snowmobile rides have become a crowd favorite. This year, visitors can try e-sports activities and relax in outdoor tent saunas.

「西会津雪国まつり」では、子どもから大人までアクティブに楽しめるのが特徴です。音楽ライブやグルメ、イルミネーション、打ち上げ花火はもちろん、他の地域ではなかなか体験できない催しも充実しています。これまでに踏み俵(ふみだわら)やむかでスキーの運動会を開催したことがあり、近年ではスノーモービルの乗車体験が人気を集めています。今年は、eスポーツ体験やテントサウナを楽しめます。

I spoke with Mr. Fujiwara from the Commerce and Tourism Division of the Nishiaizu Town Hall about the history of the Nishiaizu Snow Country Festival and the highlights to look forward to this year.

今回は、西会津町役場商工観光課の藤原正人さんに「西会津雪国まつり」の歴史や今年の見どころについて伺いました。

About the Festival /「西会津雪国まつり」について

The Nishiaizu Snow Country Festival was first held in February 1991 and marks its 36th year this winter. The festival was born out of a desire to make the most of Nishiaizu Town’s natural environment and to create an event that truly embraces winter. From the beginning, it has also aimed to share the town’s unique charm with both locals and visitors, featuring traditional winter customs such as “Sai no Kami” (a ceremonial fire festival in which old New Year’s decorations are burned, and people pray for protection from illnesses and disasters).

「西会津雪国まつり」は、1991年2月に初めて開催され、今年で第36回を迎えます。雪に恵まれた西会津町ならではの自然環境を活かし、「雪を最大限に活かしたイベントを作りたい」という想いからこの祭りが始まりました。冬の伝統行事である「歳の神」（火祭り）などを通じて、町内外に西会津町の魅力を発信したいという目標もありました。

The festival is organized by the Nishiaizu Town Furusato Promotion Committee and is supported by a wide range of local groups, including the Town Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, local Elementary and Junior High Schools, and the Tourism and Exchange Association. From the very beginning, the goal has remained the same: to share the appeal of Nishiaizu Town, invite more people to explore the town in winter, and create a festival that everyone can enjoy.

まつりは、西会津町ふるさと振興推進委員会が運営母体になり、その中では町役場をはじめ、商工会や町内の小中学校、観光交流協会など、さまざまな団体が力を合わせて毎年町全体で取り組んでいます。開催当初から、西会津町の魅力を伝え、観光客を増やしたいという想いは変わらず、誰もが楽しめる冬祭りを目指しています。

This Year's Highlights / 今年の目玉

Because the Nishiaizu Snow Country Festival is held over two days, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of activities. On the first day, the program features live music performances, the traditional “Sai no Kami” fire ceremony, and fireworks set off over the snowy landscape. On the second day, there are stage shows by Nishiaizu Town’s local hero Showjin Dener (“Shōjin Denā”) – a character fused with “Akabeko” spirit, along with comedy performances by Yoshimoto entertainers, making it a family-friendly event.

「西会津雪国まつり」は2日間にわたって開催するため、多彩なコンテンツを楽しんでいただけます。初日は音楽ライブのほか、伝統行事である「歳の神」の実施や、雪上花火の打ち上げを行います。2日目には、西会津町のご当地ヒーロー・丞神(しょうじん)デナーによるステージショーをはじめ、よしもとお笑いライブなど、家族で楽しめる催しとなっています。

While the traditional “Sai no Kami” ritual is held every year, the rest of the festival’s program changes slightly from one year to the next. To ensure the festival remains engaging year after year, the organizers continually update the program with new ideas. For example, this year’s lineup includes an e-sports experience as a modern addition, as well as the chance to try a Finnish-style tent sauna.

伝統行事である「歳の神」は毎年行っていますが、それ以外は年ごとに企画内容を少し変えています。どんなイベントも、同じ企画だけが毎年繰り返されると来場者にとって魅力が薄れる場合があるため、新しい企画を積極的に取り入れています。例えば今年は、時代に合わせた新企画の一つとしてeスポーツ体験を実施します。それから、フィンランド式テントサウナの体験もできる予定です。

At the same time, the festival also offers long-standing favorites that have been enjoyed for decades. One of the most popular is the National “Kiri Geta” (paulownia wood sandal) Throwing Competition, which has a history of more than 30 years. Paulownia is the official tree of Nishiaizu Town and was once commonly used to make traditional sandals “geta”, inspiring this unique event. Nishiaizu is also home to an active snowmobile enthusiasts’ group, and the snowmobile ride experience – offered for around the past ten years – continues to be a hit with visitors.

一方で、長年親しまれてきた定番のコンテンツもあります。中でも「桐下駄飛ばし全国大会」は31年の歴史を持つ、人気の高い催しです。桐は西会津町の町木で、かつては桐下駄が広く使われていました。この特産品を活かした催しとして、桐下駄を投げる大会を考えました。また、西会津町にはスノーモービルの愛好会があり、約10年前から実施しているスノーモービルの乗車体験も、多くの来場者から好評を得ています。

Food is another highlight of the festival, with a mix of familiar favorites and new flavors to discover. Inside the event tents, members of the local Chamber of Commerce Youth Group serve miso ramen, a longtime favorite. Meanwhile, the lineup of food trucks changes each year, offering not only classic dishes but also something new to try each time. One of this year’s highlights is a seafood stall traveling from Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture.

食の楽しみも、定番と新しいものの両方をご用意しています。会場内のテントでは、商工会青年部が名物の味噌ラーメンを提供しており、変わらない人気を誇っています。一方、キッチンカーは年ごとに出店者が少しずつ変わるため、定番料理に加え、これまでに味わったことのないメニューも楽しめます。今年の目玉としては、宮城県石巻市から海鮮グルメの出店を予定しています。
