After coming to Japan, I noticed that the atmosphere surrounding Christmas is quite different from that in my home country. Although Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, it is extremely popular. Christianity reached Japan in the 16th century, but the modern style of Christmas became widespread only in the 20th century. People celebrate in various ways: some enjoy Christmas Eve with their partners, while others spend a relaxing time with their families. By adopting foreign customs such as Santa-themed events, gift exchanges, city illuminations, and Christmas markets, Japan has developed a unique and charming Christmas culture. It feels like a bright and cheerful winter festival filled with laughter.

日本に来て、クリスマスの雰囲気がベラルーシとだいぶ違うと気づきました。日本では、クリスマスは国民の祝日ではないもののとても人気があります。キリスト教は16世紀に日本へ伝わりましたが、今のようなクリスマスの姿が広まったのは20世紀以降だといわれています。過ごし方はさまざまで、恋人とイブを楽しむ人も、家族でゆっくり過ごす人もいます。サンタの演出、プレゼント交換、街のイルミネーション、クリスマスマーケットなど、外国の風習を取り入れつつ日本ならではの素敵な文化が形成されました。笑い声が響く、明るい冬祭りのイメージです。

In contrast, Christmas in Belarus is a bright yet quiet celebration. Because it is a day commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, it carries a strong religious character, and not all households celebrate it (about forty percent of the population is atheists). Only Christian families gather with their relatives and share special dishes that are prepared only a few times a year. One common dish is “kutia”: a porridge made with grains, dried fruits, and nuts. Unlike in Japan, there is no romantic atmosphere surrounding the holiday. Even so, for Christians it remains an important day to spend with family and to attend church. In the past, there were also traditional customs such as fortune-telling for young women and children walking around town in handmade goat or bear costumes, singing songs and receiving sweets – activities somewhat reminiscent of Halloween, to explain it simply. Unfortunately, in recent years, fewer people have been passing down these folk traditions.

一方、ベラルーシのクリスマスは、明るくても静かな祭りです。イエス・キリストの誕生を祝う日ですので、宗教色が強く、すべての家庭で祝うわけではありません（国民の4割ほどは無宗教のため）。キリスト教の家庭だけが親戚同士で集まり、年に数回しか作らない特別な料理を食べます。例えば、ドライフルーツやナッツを入れた穀物のお粥のような「クティア」がよく食卓に並びます。そして、日本のようなロマンチックな雰囲気はありません。それでもキリスト教徒にとっては、家族と集まり、教会へ行く大切な日です。また、昔は女性の恋占いや、子どもがヤギやクマの手作り衣装で歌いながら街を回ってお菓子をもらうという、ハロウィーンに少し似た遊びもありました。残念ながら、近年はこの民族風習を伝える人が少なくなりました。

Aside from Christmas, the most awaited winter celebration in Belarus is the New Year, which is celebrated from December 31 to January 1. From the morning of December 31, family and friends gather, cook meals, and gradually get into the festive mood. Gifts are hidden under a Christmas tree known as the “New Year’s Tree.” In Belarus, it is not Santa Claus who brings presents to children but characters called “Ded Moroz” or “Pan Zyuzya”, (“Grandfather Frost” in English). In the evening, everyone enjoys the dishes they prepared together while waiting for midnight. When the date changes, people open champagne and celebrate the New Year with cheers, fireworks, and crackers. When you go outside to watch the city’s fireworks, neighbors and even strangers greet one another, calling out cheerful “Happy New Year!” wishes. The New Year holidays can last up to ten days, allowing people to enjoy a slow and relaxing break.

クリスマスを別として、ベラルーシで最も賑わう冬祭りは、12月31日から1月1日にかけて祝う正月です。12月31日の朝から家族や友人が集まり、料理を作り、お祝いムードが盛り上がります。「正月ツリー」と呼ぶクリスマスツリーの下にプレゼントを隠します（ベラルーシでは子どもにプレゼントを届けるのはサンタクロースではなく、「ジェド・マロース」や「パン・ジュジャ」と呼ばれる存在で、「寒さおじいさん」という意味です）。夕方には、みんなで作った食事を楽しみながら0時を待ちます。日付が変わると、シャンパンを開け、歓声とともに花火やクラッカーで新年を祝います。街の打ち上げ花火を見に外に出ると、近所の人たちや見知らぬ人同士でも「新年おめでとう！」と声を掛け合います。正月休みは10日間も続くことがあり、ゆっくり過ごせます。

And the New Year that I have come to celebrate since moving to Japan now shares several similarities with the way regular japanese people spend it. For example, I do a year-end cleaning in December, eat “toshikoshi soba” (buckwheat noodle bowl dish) on New Year’s Eve, celebrate New Year’s Day with “mochi”, and sometimes visit a shrine for “hatsumōde”. Although the Japanese New Year is different from the one in my home country, I find it to be a peaceful and beautiful holiday.
