Two of Japan’s peak travel seasons are spring for sakura and summer for sightseeing, but autumn brings another magical highlight – colorful foliage. Few places match Japan’s stunning autumn scenery. The vivid colors of Fukushima’s autumn foliage create a calming, handwoven tapestry-like landscape. Especially mesmerizing are the scarlet maples (“momiji”) and golden ginkgo trees that create a uniquely Japanese atmosphere. As a foreigner living in Fukushima, I always feel excited for the autumn foliage no less than for the sakura season. Today, I’ve gathered some of my favourite Fukushima places for an autumn drive, where you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves.

日本国内で春の桜や夏の観光シーズンに多く旅行しますが、秋の紅葉シーズンも引けを取りません。鮮やかな色彩が織りなす日本の紅葉は心を和ませる絶景で、まるで手織りのタペストリーのようです。世界でもこれほどの景観を楽しめる場所は多くありません。真っ赤な紅葉と黄金色のイチョウは特に魅力的で、多くの観光客から人気を集めています。私は福島に住む外国人として、桜の季節と同じくらい秋の紅葉にも心を踊らせています。今回は、私の秋のオススメドライブスポット、紅葉狩りスポットをご紹介します。

Classic Autumn Views in Fukushima / 福島の定番の秋景色

1. Bandai-Azuma skyline (late September – late October). Beautiful mountain driving route, which combines endless landscapes of autumn leaves and an etherial scenery. There is a winter road closure (mid-November – mid-April), and a night road closure (if there is a risk of freezing conditions), so make sure to check the current conditions.

1. 磐梯吾妻スカイライン（9月下旬〜10月下旬）は、色とりどりの紅葉と荒々しくも美しい景観が広がる観光道路です。11月中旬〜4月中旬は冬期通行止め、また凍結の恐れがある際は夜間通行止めとなるため、事前に最新情報をご確認ください。

2. Mt. Adatara (October). This mountain features hiking trails and onsen, and in winter you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding. The highlight is the Mt. Adatara Ropeway, which presents breathtaking panoramic views of the autumn leaves covering the mountain.

2. 安達太良山（10月）には、トレッキングコースや温泉があり、冬にはスキー場やゲレンデも利用できます。息をのむような山全体を覆う紅葉のパノラマビューを満喫できるあだたら山ロープウェイがおすすめです。

3. Goshikinuma Pond Group, Kitashiobara Village (mid-October – early November). Hidden in the forest colorful ponds are ranging in color from green to aquamarine, creating a stunning contrast with leaf foliage. This part of Urabandai area has many resort facilities, so you can also rent a bicycle or take a Lake Hibara cruise and enjoy the scenery peacefully from the water.

3. 五色沼湖沼群［北塩原村］（10月中旬〜11月上旬）は、森に覆れた小さな沼で、エメラルドグリーンやコバルトグリーンに輝き、紅葉との美しいコントラストを生み出します。裏磐梯のこのエリアには数々のリゾート施設があり、レンタルサイクルを楽しんだり、桧原湖観光船に乗って水上から見事な景色を眺められます。

4. Azuma Sports Park, Fukushima City (late October – mid-November). The park’s Japanese elms and maples turn radiant shades of orange and yellow, but the main spot is the Line of Ginkgo Trees. More than 100 of them glow in vibrant yellow, and in late October they are beautifully illuminated at night.

4. あづま総合運動公園［福島市］（10月下旬〜11月中旬）。公園のケヤキや紅葉が赤や黄色に色づく様子を楽しめますが、最も注目を集めるのは「イチョウ並木」です。100本以上のイチョウが鮮やかな黄金色に輝き、10月下旬には夜のライトアップも行われます。
期間：10月22日～11月9日の予定（火曜日はお休み）
時間：17:00～20:00

Well Known but Hidden Treasures / 隠れた名所

The following spots are loved by local people, and are well worth a visit during this autumn.
次にご紹介するのは、地元の人に昔から愛されているスポットで、紅葉の季節にぜひ訪れてほしいところです。

1. Fukuman Kokūzō Bosatsu Enzōji Temple, Yanaizu Town (mid-October – early November). The legendary temple, built more than 1,200 years ago, is where Akabeko – one of cherished characters of the prefecture – first appeared. From the top of the steep stairs, you can see red “momiji” maples, the Tadami River, and Yanaizu Zuikōji Bridge. The best time is slightly before and at dusk, when town lights slightly reflect on the water. Don’t miss trying local sweets as awa-manjū from the nearby confectionery shops.

1. 福満虚空藏菩薩 圓藏寺［柳津町］（10月中旬〜11月上旬）。1200年以上も前に建立された圓藏寺は、県のキャラクターの一つである赤べこ伝説発祥の場所とされています。正面参道から本堂に向かう急な階段を上ると、彩り豊かな紅葉の森やのどかな只見川、柳津瑞光寺橋を一望できます。夕暮れ時には、街の灯りが水面にほんのりと映る様子が特におすすめです。近くにある菓子店では、あわまんじゅうなどの郷土菓子を味わえます。

2. Nakasenuma Pond and Nakatsugawa Valley, Kitashiobara Village (mid-October – early November). If you visit Goshikinuma Pond Group, these two spots are worth a stop. From the Nakasenuma observation deck, you can see autumn trees floating on small islets in the blue pond, with Mt. Bandai rising in the distance. About 20 minutes away by car lies Nakatsugawa valley, which can be admired from the bridge above or explored by walking down into the valley carved by the river. Over time, water has sculpted the rocks into quaint shapes, creating a unique scenery. The trees along the river shift from green to brilliant red, creating a beautiful contrast with the water.

2. 中瀬沼、中津川渓谷［北塩原村］（10月中旬〜11月初旬）。五色沼を訪れる際に、併せて立ち寄りたいスポットです。中瀬沼の展望台からは、青い池に浮かぶ小島や秋色に染まった木々、そして遠くにそびえる磐梯山を眺めることができます。中津川渓谷は、中瀬沼から車で約20分の場所にあり、橋の上から眺めたり渓谷を散策したりがおすすめです。川の水が長い歳月をかけて岩を削り出し、趣のある景観になっています。川沿いの木々は緑から鮮やかな赤へと紅葉し、水面との美しいコントラストを作り出します。


Other famous places in Fukushima Prefecture include The First Tadami-River Bridge Viewpoint (Mishima Town), Ja no Hana Gardens (Motomiya City), Shiramizu Amidadō Temple (Iwaki City), and more. Since leaf foliage season depends on temperature and daylight, peak timing varies across the prefecture, allowing you can visit many places within a couple of weeks.

福島県には他にも、只見川第一橋梁展望台（三島町）、蛇の鼻（本宮市）、白水阿弥陀堂（いわき市）などの有名な紅葉スポットがあります。紅葉の見頃は気温や日照時間によって変わり、県内各地で時期が異なるため、数週間の間に各地を巡って紅葉を楽しむことができます。
