第十二話・・・大学にオバマ大統領がやってきた

あれは渡米12日目、携帯電話を手に入れて１週間経ったばかりの時だった。

「一部の方はご存じの通り、大学に、10月22日、オバマ大統領がやってきます」

　ひょろっとこのようなメールが、大学から流れてきたのだ。

　いやあ、驚いた。中間選挙で大接戦にもつれこんでいるワシントン州の現職上院議員、パティ・マレイ氏の応援演説で、オバマ大統領がシアトルに来るという。その会場が、わが大学。「来場希望者は、パティ・マレイ議員の事務所サイトにて、事前受付します」とあるので、もちろん申し込んだ。それからは毎日、パティ・マレイ陣営から「あなたの献金まってます」といったメールが送られてきたのには閉口したが。

　さて当日は、朝9時から受け付け開始とのこと。朝バスに乗ると、大きなカメラを抱えたシアトル市民が何人も、興奮ぎみにおしゃべりしていた。「2008年はもっと、混雑していたねえ」等々と。

　バスを降りると、なだれのように人が会場へ向かっていった。私もがんばって早歩きしたが、こういう時、小柄はソンだ。おばあちゃんでも大きなアメリカ人には、一歩の長さで完敗している。

　たぶん一生忘れられない長蛇の列は、と聞かれれば、私はこの日だと答えるだろう。歩いても歩いても、「最後尾」にたどり着けない。蟻地獄のように、あそこが最後尾だ、あそこまで歩けば、と思ってたどり着いた時には、最後尾はさらにずっと後ろへ伸びている。

　最後尾に着くまでに一時間。それからさらに並んで一時間。

　ところが会場入り口に着くと、「会場には入れない」と言われた。隣にあるフットボールスタジアムのスタンド席に、流し込まれたのだ。

　正面に見えるは、巨大電光掲示板。せっかく並んだのに、オバマ大統領は、電光掲示板で見ろってこと？

　電光掲示板は、本会場の様子を中継しはじめた。ボランティアの女子学生が「みなさーん、今日は授業にいかずに、この会場へ来てくれてありがとう！」と声を張り上げた。いろんな立場の民主党員が、演説をし始めた。これ、ここで見るだけで帰れっていうの、と思ったその時。

　大統領が、軽やかに小走りしながら、私たちの目の前にやってきたのだ。

　なんと細い人なのか。ひょろっと上背もあり、坊主頭のオバマ大統領は、年齢不詳の青年、という雰囲気だ。「こっちで待っているみなさんは、屋外で寒いでしょうから、先にこっちへ来ました！」。こう言って、友達の結婚式に挨拶しに来たように、すたすたと演台に上った。

　会場、大興奮。本当にスタジアムは寒かったので、気遣いが嬉しかった。大統領、ナイスガイだなあ。こうやって政治家は人の心をつかむのだなあと思いながらも、目の前の生オバマに釘付けになった。

　さて当日の演説は、10分足らずの短いものながらも、しっかり「オバマ節」になっていた。

「私たちの先祖は、アメリカへ、新しい生活を始めるためにやってきました」とアメリカ人のアイデンティティをくすぐる前置き。「でもこの10年の不景気で、人々は生活にあえいでいます」といった危機感を示す下りに続く。それから「けれども、私たちにはパティ・マレイがいる！」と本題である現職議員の応援に、踏み入れる。

　「To make sure　なんとかなんとか、To make sure　なんとかなんとか」

　候補応援という、その日の演説の最も大事な部分に差しかかった時、彼は「To make sure」というフレーズを繰り返した。これぞオバマ節。

　「To make sure」が繰り返されるたびに、観客、ワーッ！　

　うまいなあ。

　サプライズ登場、そしてお決まりのオバマ節で盛り上げる。ショーアップ政治と批判されようが、大衆の心はこうして動くのだと、実感したのだった。

　せっかくのオバマ生演説、途中からだが録音したので、文字起こししてみた。かなり文法的に間違っている（けれども、そうきこえるのでそのまま書いた）し、聞き間違えて文字化している部分もあると思うが、ご容赦頂きたい。

People found as if the economy was only for those very tough,and that no matter how work you trading your order people were more having trouble making ends meet, paying for health care, paying for colledge educations, and I think a lot of young people started feeling that made in twenty first century wouldnt be the American century like twentyth century once.

And our campain was back in 2008, was remiding everybody that there was nothing we can't do when we joined together as citizens, from every walk of life, there is nothing we can't accomplish when we dream peoples in around the world form.

And over the last two years, as difficult and as things event, as biggest the problem we had inherited, I have been so inspired because I have the opportunity people like that Patty Murray, to make sure that every American have decent health care, to make sure that economy that were shrinking as drawing again, to start people back to work, to make sure that we got an equal pay for equal work, to make sure that we got a coulple of wonderful women in supreme court, to make sure the young sth to afford a colledge education, to make sure that we brought back a hundred thousands of troops from Iraq, to make sure that we are expecting around the world once again to start the best thing and research, development that our economy can thrive,to make sure we investigating clean energy,so that we are the forefront, not only our growing economy but saving the planet.
And I have been inspired by you, because whereever I go, traveling across this country,especially when I meat young people. I am reminded of your energy,drive and your imagination,and for all the proms we going through right now, we still have best workers on us, we find a best university on us,we got the best entrepreneurs, we got the freest most fiber economy on us,I almost say that we got a pretty good president....,and so,this is the point ,look, and we got so hard on ??
work so hard this institution, work so hard on behalve of you,I have got the Patty Murry as partner in Washington.

So I am here to deliver the massage and you are not voted yet,you got to get that smth put in the mail,don't delay,do it right after this rally,you gotta talk to your friends, you gotta talk to your neighbours to make phone calls, you gotta knock on doors,you have to make sure that you are as fired off as excited as now as you are two years ago,because world case not yet done, I have to had that Patty Murray that in the united states senater, and I get that promise we'll do that.And you need Patty Murray back in the United States' senater, you need to send it if you do, I guarantee I continue to work to make sure American dreams just here to this generation for generations to go.
