Still in Season! Belated Foliage Spots /

While many countries have distinct seasons, autumn in Japan is particularly vivid. The deep red hues of “momiji” (Japanese maple leaves) adorning streets and parks create a landscape that you will never forget once you have seen it in person. However, the peak foliage season lasts for only about two to three weeks, and in Fukushima the leaves are already starting to fall bit by bit.
Back in spring, I put together a small guide to late-blooming cherry blossom spots for those who missed the main “hanami” season. Time flies quickly, and according to the traditional Japanese calendar, we are already entering early winter. This time, I would like to introduce a few late-season autumn foliage spots where you can still catch the vibrant colors before they are gone.
Tanagura Castle Ruins (Tanagura Town) /
Best Season: Early to Mid-November
This site marks the historical grounds of Tanagura Castle, built in 1625 by Nagashige Niwa. With a long history of castle lords frequently changing throughout the Edo period, a mysterious local legend arose claiming that “whenever a large turtle floated up in the moat, the lord of the castle would change”, earning it the affectionate nickname “Kame-ga-jō” (Turtle Castle). In autumn, the vibrant “momiji” maples lining the moat reflect beautifully onto the water's surface, creating a peaceful scene in traditional atmosphere. Another highlight is the massive zelkova tree near the site of the Ote-mon Gate. Estimated to be around 640 years old, it stands as a symbol of the town, welcoming visitors as they arrive.
Nanko Park (Shirakawa City) /
Best Season: Early to Mid-November
Created in 1801 by a feudal lord Sadanobu Matsudaira, Nanko Park was designed as a place where anyone could enjoy nature, no matter their social standing. Standing along the shoreline of this roughly two-kilometer lake with views of the Nasu Mountain Range in the distance, you observe a breathtaking landscape that changes beautifully with every season. Beyond exploring the famous “Seventeen Views of Nanko” on a stroll, it is also highly recommended to take a relaxing break at one of the cozy teahouses or cafes along the lake. The nearby Japanese garden is also a popular autumn foliage destination, which has a serene atmosphere where you can fully immerse yourself in the quiet beauty of fall.
Sukagawa Peony Garden (Sukagawa City) /
Best Season: Mid-November
As the only peony garden in Japan designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty, Sukagawa Peony Garden is also a magnificent spot for autumn foliage. Its history traces back roughly 250 years, when peony seedlings were first planted here for medicinal purposes. Across the sprawling 10-hectare grounds, as many as 290 species of peonies bloom vibrantly in May. In autumn, however, the garden transforms with deep crimson fall colors that are equally unmissable. Visitors can take in picturesque scenes throughout the grounds, from the striking contrast between old pine trees and bright red maples near the entrance to colorful tunnels of “momiji” leaves.
The time period to enjoy autumn always passes by faster than we expect. Before the first snow arrives, why not take a moment to slow down and savor the final sights and flavors of the autumn season?
