Fukushima Prefecture is home to many tourist attractions that stand out not only in Japan but even on an international scale. Opened in Inawashiro Town in 1995, the World Glassware Hall offers not only a wide selection of beautiful glass items for purchase but also allows visitors to freely explore rare vintage pieces crafted by skilled artisans with long traditions behind them. I believe that glass is a remarkable medium: every country has developed its own distinct techniques, styles, and traditions, making it both a reflection of human history and a vital part of our cultural heritage.
The World Glassware Hall is an great place to stop during a drive, and with souvenirs for every budget it's well worth visiting if you are in the Lake Inawashiro area. To learn more about the Hall's legacy and attractions, I spoke with Mr. Osawa from the DMC Aizu Co., Ltd., which operates tourism-related facilities across the Aizu region.
The World Glassware Hall is one of Japan's largest glass galleries, showcasing and selling roughly 25,000 glass products gathered from 15 countries. Featuring collections from Europe, Asia, and Japan, its selection ranges from everyday tableware to delicate antique pieces. Beyond shopping, visitors can also experience glassmaking traditions and craftsmanship from around the world. Here you can admire extraordinary pieces of art, including a 100-million-yen Venetian glass chandelier crafted using techniques that are nearly impossible to replicate today, as well as rare pieces acquired from the Sotheby's auction house. Admission is free, making it easy for anyone to drop in and enjoy the artistry. It is a place I often visit when going for a drive with friends from abroad, and the exquisite colors and shimmer of both the gallery pieces and retail items never fail to captivate me, and I always find myself wandering the hall for a while.
The Hall traces its origins to the then-president's trip abroad, when he fell in love with European glass culture. At the time, he was working in forestry and golf course management, with virtually no knowledge of glassmaking. Driven by a desire to share these beautiful creations with people back home, he launched the business. Inawashiro was chosen as the location for their third branch, following sites in Hokkaido and Kagawa, thanks to its strong appeal as a tourist destination and the improved highway access. Fittingly for the scenic region, the building itself was designed with European alpine architecture in mind, evoking the atmosphere of a Swiss mountain house.
In the early days, the Hall focused mainly on European products. Over time, however, the inventory expanded to reflect changing trends and customer needs. Today, it showcases glassware from across Europe, Asia, and Japan. When sourcing pieces from abroad, the team places a strong emphasis on how well items fit into daily Japanese life, carefully selecting products based on their size, practicality, and design. The selection is diverse, spanning European crystal and Bohemian glass alongside classic Japanese traditions like “Edo kiriko” and “Satsuma kiriko” (traditional “cut-glass” techniques). Many of the pieces acquired in Europe during the company's early years remain on display inside. Because these vintage crafts are rare even in their countries of origin, they now draw visits from overseas glass enthusiasts hoping to see these historic pieces for themselves.
Seasonal product lineups are another key highlight. In the summer, the shelves feature refreshing blue glassware and glass wind chimes handcrafted in the on-site workshop. As autumn arrives, they transition to double-walled glasses ideal for hot drinks and glassware in foliage-inspired hues. A personal favorite of mine is a double-walled glass that incorporates traditional “kiriko” techniques. Small glass figurines themed around Fukushima specialties like peaches, “Akabeko” (red cows), and other animals are also popular souvenir choices among visitors.
On the second floor, visitors can enjoy daily hands-on workshops in five creative crafts: glass etching, snow globes, crystal globes, gel candles, and natural stone bracelets. Each workshop is designed so that anyone can participate. Pre-drawn templates and easy-to-use materials make it simple even for children to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake. The workshops are especially popular with families and school groups alike, with choices shifting throughout the seasons. The Hall also features a photo spot styled with shimmering crystal wings, offering guests a memorable backdrop to snap a photo of their visit.
In recent years, the Hall has seen a steady rise in international independent travelers from Taiwan and other countries, who visit the area for hiking Mt. Bandai or skiing. According to Mr. Osawa, the company is actively working to highlight the broader appeal of the region. By cooperating with adjacent facilities like the Inawashiro Original Beer Brewery, they aim to offer visitors a well-rounded way to explore Inawashiro Town through food, shopping, and hands-on activities. The team also frequently sets up booths at local festivals and events, introducing both fine glassware and the charm of the region to wider audiences.
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake dealt a severe blow to the facility, causing parts of the ceiling to collapse and destroying countless delicate glass pieces. In the aftermath, fears surrounding the nuclear disaster caused tourism across Fukushima Prefecture to plummet, throwing the Hall's future into doubt. Yet, the current president, who was serving as general manager at the time, was convinced that neither guests nor staff would ever return if the doors remained shut, and he chose to keep operating. Overcoming many hurdles, from severe staffing shortages to forced temporary closures during the pandemic, the facility persevered. Today, as part of the DMC Aizu Group, the Hall is embarking on new initiatives to boost regional tourism, encouraging visitors to tour multiple facilities and expanding group workshop experiences.
The final message was an invitation for readers to stop by, explore the exhibits and products, and discover your own personal favorites among the collection. With 25,000 glass pieces under one roof, the World Glassware Hall brings together glassmaking traditions and craftsmanship from around the world. Why not stop by and take your time exploring the Hall, reflecting on the history and craftsmanship behind each piece as you search for a favorite of your own?
