When foreigners think about Japanese festivals, traditional events and “matsuri” held at shrines are usually the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, Japan has also been holding local festivals celebrating nature's bounty and the seasonal harvest. Today, alongside these historic harvest celebrations, modern food markets and farmers' markets are popping up in many places, giving people new ways to enjoy local produce. It is also wonderful to see communities come together to share food, connect with each other, and enjoy the best of the season.
Moving to Fukushima changed the way I experience the seasons and nature. Living here, the fields and rice paddies are an everyday backdrop, and the vegetables, fruit, and rice grown nearby seem to taste even better for it. The longer I live here, the more deeply I appreciate the time and effort local farmers put into their work every single day.
In an age where food is always available, autumn harvest festivals and neighborhood markets have a special appeal. Local governments and residents come together to plan these events, thinking about how to make visitors enjoy themselves and how to pass on the importance of agriculture to the next generation. Visiting one of these festivals is about more than just sampling regional specialties. It gives you a chance to experience the warmth of the community, discover local history, and get a glimpse of everyday life in the area. Every municipality in Fukushima has its own personality which can be felt through in the atmosphere of their events. Here are a few upcoming harvest festivals where you can experience the charm of Fukushima.
Miharu no Sato Harvest Festival /
Mention Miharu Town to non-residents, and most will instantly think of Miharu Takizakura — the legendary weeping cherry tree that draws huge crowds every spring. Because of this, Miharu is often seen as a spring destination, however the town also hosts autumn events that make it well worth a visit. One highlight is the “Miharu no Sato Harvest Festival”. The event features dishes made with seasonal local ingredients alongside hands-on activities designed for friends and families to enjoy together. A popular activity for kids (elementary school age and younger) is the freshwater char catching event. Children chase the quick, slippery fish with their bare hands, making a splash as they try to catch them. Another staple is the “1 Kilogram Rice Guessing Game”, where participants try to scoop out exactly one kilogram of rice — a surprisingly addictive challenge that is easy to get caught up in. The festival also features a handmade market with unique goods from local artisans, live stage performances, and a lively lineup of food trucks and traditional festival stalls. Adding to the fun, this year visitors who arrive in Halloween costumes will receive free sweets, so don’t forget to dress up a little bit.

Kawamata Harvest /
This harvest festival was born out of a desire to help people learn more about local farmers, share the joy of eating locally grown produce, and make agriculture more familiar to children. Built around the ideas of connecting people with farmers and promoting local farm-to-table food, it offers something for every age to enjoy. On the day of the event, farmers from within and outside the town set up stalls with various produce alongside a diverse array of eateries that use local ingredients. The market is filled with fresh vegetables, fruit, and flowers, while visitors can also sample exclusive Japanese and Western dishes made with produce grown in Kawamata Town. Beyond the food, visitors can explore agriculture and local culture firsthand, with activities ranging from riding real farm machinery and trying traditional dyeing using famous Kawamata silk to viewing Kawamata Shamo chicks and taking part in craft workshops. Surrounded by lush nature, this relaxed harvest market offers a chance to slow down and connect with the local community and the land.

Katsurao Megumi Kanshasai /
Another event worth adding to your autumn itinerary is Katsurao Village's “Thanksgiving Festival”. The first thing that comes to mind when people think of this festival is probably the giant pot of “tonjiru” — a hearty soup packed with pork and vegetables. Every year, locals team up to prepare 1,500 servings of this signature dish, made with vegetables harvested in the village, offering a taste of autumn in Katsurao. Another highlight is the chance to sample freshly handmade “shin-soba” (new-crop buckwheat noodles; available in limited quantities). Stage entertainment offers something for all ages, featuring musical performances and character shows. Children can also look forward to a popular mini petting zoo with small animals. Additionally, the unmanned farm stand “Tomo-ichi”, which is open every Thursday at the Katsurao Village Reconstruction and Interaction Center “Azalea”, will be set up at the festival for the day. It is a great opportunity to buy fresh local vegetables at affordable prices.

These are just a few examples: across Fukushima, the autumn calendar is packed with harvest festivals, “imoni-kai” (taro soup gatherings), and seasonal farmers' markets. Visiting these local events offers a great opportunity to experience the region's rich agricultural heritage, longstanding traditions, and the simple pleasures of autumn. If you are planning a trip to Fukushima in October or November, be sure to check local listings for upcoming harvest or “shin-soba” festivals and consider including one or two in your itinerary.
