Aizu region is the place where many of the traditional crafts representing Fukushima Prefecture were born. Among these, “Akabeko” (red cow figures), “Okiagari-kobōshi” (tumbler dolls), Aizu lacquerware, and woven crafts are especially well known. Yet there is another traditional craft that should not be overlooked when talking about Aizu’s heritage. This time, I want to introduce the charming Aizu painted candles (“Aizu e-rōsoku”), which have long added vibrant color to the nights of this snowy region. I've seen Aizu painted candles in souvenir shops for years, but it was only last year that I learned the story behind them and truly understood why they remain a gift shop staple.
The history of Aizu painted candles dates back about 500 years. It is said to have begun during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), when the local feudal lord Morinobu Ashina promoted the cultivation of lacquer trees and began extracting wax from their berries. Later, another lord, Ujisato Gamō, invited skilled craftsmen to the region; the candles they created came to be highly prized as top-quality goods, quickly becoming an important local specialty. In fact, it is said that two-thirds of all the candles used in Edo (present-day Tokyo) were produced in Aizu.
Craftsmen make these painted candles by hand, one by one, using wax extracted from Japanese wax tree berries. The candles feature a unique silhouette that is thicker at the top and gradually tapers down toward the base. The wick is made from traditional Japanese paper and soft rush, carefully crafted to leave the center hollow. This clever design creates a large, warm flame that burns for a long time. The wax rarely drips down the outside, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful hand-painted designs until the very end.
To paint on the wax, artisans first apply a base coat called “gojiru” — a liquid made from crushed beans. This allows them to paint vibrant flowers, such as chrysanthemums and peonies, directly onto the candle's surface. Since fresh flowers were difficult to find during the deep, snowy winters of Aizu, these painted candles came to be used as “flowers that never wither”, traditionally placed on household altars. Today, they are also widely enjoyed as gifts, elegant wedding decorations, and beautiful interior accents. During the winter, Aizuwakamatsu City hosts the magnificent “Aizu Painted Candle Festival”, where around 10,000 of these candles are lit. Held over two days at iconic locations across the city, including Tsurugajō Castle and Oyakuen Garden, the event beautifully illuminates the snowy winter landscape with the warm flickering glow of the candles.
You can find Aizu painted candles at specialty shops in Aizuwakamatsu City, the souvenir shop at Tsurugajō Castle, roadside stations in the Aizu area, or the Fukushima Prefecture Souvenir Shop near Fukushima Station. While many people prefer to keep them unlit as beautiful decorations, why not try lighting one to experience its genuine glow? If you decide to use one at home, make sure to place it on a stable surface. Since the wick is thick, the flame can grow quite large. When it is time to put it out, it is safer to use a candle snuffer rather than blowing on it forcefully. Take your time and relax while enjoying this warm, comforting light — a tradition truly unique to Aizu.
