August is one of the most delicious times to visit Fukushima. Local markets and roadside farm stands are overflowing with freshly harvested produce, while orchards across the prefecture are at their busiest. Fukushima is one of Japan’s leading agricultural regions, producing an impressive variety of rice, fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, and flowers. I would recommend visiting farm stands or driving along Fukushima City’s “Fruit Line”, where many orchards offer fruit-picking. Having spent several summers in rural Fukushima, I look forward to this season every year. Friends and neighbors often share freshly picked produce from their gardens, which to me feels like a thoughtful gesture that reflects the warmth of the local community.

福島の8月は、一年でも特に“おいしい”季節です。地元のマルシェや市場、直売所には採れたての農産物が並び、県内の果樹園は最盛期を迎えます。福島県は全国有数の農業県で、米をはじめ果物、野菜、肉など多彩な食材がそろっており、この時期にこそ、各地域の直売所に立ち寄ったり、果物狩りが楽しめる福島市の「フルーツライン」などに出かけたりするのがおすすめです。福島の山あいのまちで何年か夏を過ごしてきた私は、この季節を毎年楽しみにしています。友人や近所の方から庭で採れた野菜などをいただくこともよくあり、そのような気遣いに地域の方のあたたかさを感じます。
