First, I spoke with Ms. Yamazaki, the manager at Tsukidate Hana Kōbō.

— Could you tell me about this facility’s concept?

— Tsukidate Hana Kōbō and the neighboring Morimori Exchange Center are located on the hills of the Tsukidate district in Date City. They were created to connect urban and rural areas, giving city dwellers a chance to experience the appeal of the countryside. This year marks our 30th anniversary. Tsukidate Hana Kōbō serves as a lodging, while Morimori Exchange Center was built later. At Morimori, we sell fresh vegetables grown by local farmers. Hearing visitors say how delicious the produce is brings energy to the local community. The original goal for both facilities is to welcome visitors from the Tōkyō metropolitan area who want to stay for three to four days to enjoy farm activities. Today, we also welcome many couples in their 60s and 70s looking for a relaxing getaway, as well as former local residents returning home who visit us as a comforting, nostalgic spot.

まずはつきだて花工房の支配人・山崎佳代さんにお話を伺いました。

— こちらはどのような施設ですか?

— つきだて花工房と交流館もりもりは、伊達市月舘山向の丘陵地にある、「都市と農村の交流」を目的に都会の方々に田舎の魅力を知っていただくための施設です。今年で開業30周年を迎えます。宿泊施設はつきだて花工房といい、その後に建てられたのが交流館もりもりです。交流館では、地域の皆さんが育てた新鮮な野菜を販売しており、「美味しいね」と喜んでいただけることが地域の元気にもつながっています。両施設は、首都圏の方に3〜4日滞在し、農業体験を楽しんでいただくことを目標にしており、今では旅館のようにゆっくり過ごしたい60〜70代のご夫婦や、月舘出身の方が帰省の際に懐かしい場所として利用してくださることが多いです。

— Have there been any major changes in the facility or the local area over the past 30 years?

— The biggest change has been the declining population, along with our regular guests becoming older. We want to create a place that leaves a lasting impression on younger generations, somewhere they look back on fondly and say, “I'd love to visit again someday”. At the same time, reaching this 30-year milestone has brought some truly heartwarming moments. Kids who used to try pizza-making or flowing noodles (“nagashi sōmen”) at the Morimori Exchange Center are now university students. Sometimes their parents come back and tell us that their kids had such a wonderful time here. Hearing stories like that reminds me that these past 30 year have been worth it.

— この30年で施設や地域に変化はありましたか?

— 一番大きな変化は人口減少で、リピーターの方も高齢になりました。そのため、若い人たちに「昔あそこへ行ったな、良い思い出だった」「将来また訪れたい」と思っていただける場所にしていきたいですね。一方で、30年続けてきたからこそのうれしい出来事もあります。交流館もりもりで昔ピザ焼きや流しそうめんを体験した子どもたちが大学生になり、ご家族から「子どもがお世話になったんですよ」と声をかけてくださることがあります。そのようなお話を聞くと、30年も続けてきてよかったと思います。

— Are there any specific events or projects that stand out in your memory?

— The annual literary reading we held every year before the pandemic is definitely one of my fondest memories. It combined live music with spoken word, a concept that was still quite rare in this region at the time. We had to pause it during the pandemic, but now we actively work on bringing it back this year. We built the stage and set up the lighting all by ourselves, driven by a real spirit of teamwork. Even when inviting professional narrators and musicians, we always kept that cozy, handmade warmth unique to Hana Kōbō, so I'd love to see it happen again. Another highlight was our harpsichord concert, which you don't see very often in Fukushima. On one occasion, local elementary school students even played their recorders alongside the harpsichord. That was a truly unforgettable collaboration.

— 特に印象に残っている出来事や企画はどのようなことですか?

— コロナ禍の前まで毎年開催していた「朗読会」は忘れられない思い出の一つです。音楽と朗読を組み合わせた企画で、当時はこの地域ではまだ珍しかったと思います。コロナ禍以降はお休みしていますが、今年こそ再開したいと、構想を練っているところです。舞台や照明もすべて自分たちで手作りし、「みんなで一緒に作り上げよう」という思いで続けていました。プロのナレーターや音楽家の方をお招きし、花工房らしい手作りの温かさを大切にしていたイベントなのでぜひ実現したいです。もう一つ印象深いのは、チェンバロコンサートです。福島県内でも珍しい企画でしたが、地元の小学生がチェンバロの演奏に合わせてリコーダーを演奏したこともあり、とても思い出に残っています。

— Have you met any memorable guests through your work here?

— By the door of each guest room, we have watercolor paintings of flowers on display. They were actually painted by one of our regular guests, the watercolor artist Mr. Wakamatsu. Every year on his way to see the cherry blossoms in Hirosaki City (*Aomori Prefecture), he would stay with us at Hana Kōbō. Over time, that connection grew, and he even donated a sapling descended from Miharu Takizakura (*Miharu Town, Fukushima Prefecture) — one of Japan's Three Great Cherry Trees. Mr. Wakamatsu actually took up painting during a hospital stay. The artwork born from that turning point in his life continues to brighten the hallways today.

— 仕事を通じて出会った印象的なお客様もいらっしゃいましたか？

— 各客室前に花の水彩画を飾っているのですが、実はお客様でもある水彩画家の若松倫夫さんの作品です。弘前の桜を見に行かれる途中、毎年花工房へ立ち寄ってくださるご縁があり、日本三大桜の一つ「三春の滝桜」の子孫の苗木も寄贈してくださいました。若松さんは入院をきっかけに絵を描き始められたそうです。人生の転機から生まれた作品が、今も花工房の廊下を彩っています。

— What makes Tsukidate Hana Kōbō unique?

— Above all, the mornings here feel wonderful. The view of the Abukuma Mountains right outside from your room’s window is something I can't recommend enough. Early in the morning, a sea of clouds often settles between the peaks. In summer, you can watch the sun sink below the mountain ridge; it has a charming, tranquil feel that's completely different from a coastal sunset. Simply sitting back and enjoying the cool evening air is a real luxury.

The facility is also fully accessible, so wheelchair users can stay comfortably. On top of that, we take pride in the herbal bath and the restaurant, where you can savor local Date chicken and fresh regional vegetables.

— つきだて花工房にはどのような特色がありますか?

— 何よりも「朝の時間」がとても気持ちいいです。部屋の窓から望む阿武隈山系の山並みはイチオシです。早朝には山々の間に雲海が広がることもあります。夏には山の稜線へ太陽が沈み、海とはまた違った趣があります。夕涼みしながらゆっくり過ごす時間は、本当に贅沢です。

また、館内はバリアフリー対応なので、車椅子をご利用の方でも安心してお過ごしいただけます。他にも、ハーブ湯や地元の新鮮な野菜、伊達鶏などを味わえるレストランも自慢です。

— What kind of herbs do you use in the herbal bath?

— We source 100% natural dried herbs, such as lavender, rosemary, and mint, from Yanagawa neighborhood (Date City). Instead of synthetic fragrances, guests enjoy a natural, gentle scent that is also soft on the skin. Right now, the lavender planted on our grounds is also in bloom, so I hope our visitors enjoy exploring different aromas.

— ハーブ湯ではどのようなハーブを使われているのでしょうか?

— ラベンダーやローズマリー、ミントなど、100%天然のドライハーブを梁川町から仕入れています。人工的な香りではなく、肌にも優しい自然な香りを楽しんでいただけます。また、今は敷地内で育てているラベンダーが咲いており、お客様にそれぞれの香りを楽しんでいただけたらうれしいです。

— Are there any particular dishes you recommend at the restaurant?

— The most popular dish is the soup curry, made with generous chunks of local vegetables simmered until tender. Our Date chicken dishes and “Miso Katsudon” (pork cutlet bowl with miso) are also big hits. For lunch, our freshly fried tempura is very popular, so the tempura set meal and “Ten-zaru soba” (cold buckwheat noodles served with tempura) are top choices. For udon, we use “Kinuazuma”, a locally grown wheat variety from the Tsukidate and Iitate areas known for its rich, distinct flavor. I also highly recommend our “Kuwa Udon” (mulberry leaf udon), which honors the region's history of silkworm farming and the local legend of Princess “Otehime” (a figure who indrodused sericulture to the region).

— レストランで味わってほしい料理はありますか?

— 一番人気なのは、地元野菜を大きく切り、じっくり煮込んだ「スープカレー」です。「伊達鶏シリーズ」や「味噌カツ丼」も注目を集めています。ランチは注文を受けてから揚げる天ぷらが好評で、「天ぷら定食」や「天ざるそば」は特におすすめです。うどんは月舘町や飯舘村などで育てた地元産小麦「きぬあずま」を使っており、強い風味が特徴です。また、養蚕が盛んだった歴史や「小手姫伝説」にちなんだ桑の葉入りの「桑うどん」もぜひ味わっていただきたいです。

— Out of all the activities at Tsukidate Hana Kōbō, which one does your staff recommend the most?

— It’s not available year-round, but our winter miso-making workshop is definitely top of the list. It's a favorite hands-on experience where we make miso using traditional methods. Part of the process involves throwing balls of miso paste into the barrel with a loud “thump!” to remove the air, which kids absolutely love. We have many regular guests who return every year for it, and we hope to keep passing this Japanese food culture on to the next generation. The udon-making workshop is another great option. Using “Kinuazuma” wheat flour, guests knead the dough by stepping on it with their feet. Making udon at home used to be a regular part of daily life here, so experiencing that traditional culinary heritage firsthand is an experience unique to this area.

— つきだて花工房で働く皆さんが、一番おすすめしたい体験メニューは何ですか?

— 通年ではありませんが、やはり冬の「味噌作り体験」が一番だと思います。伝統的な製法で仕込むおなじみの体験です。味噌作りでは、団子状にした味噌を樽へ「ボンボン!」と叩きつけて空気を抜く作業があり、子どもたちにも大人気です。毎年参加されるリピーターも多く、日本の伝統的な食文化を次の世代へ伝えていけたらと思っています。「うどん打ち体験」もおすすめです。「きぬあずま」を使い、生地を足で踏んで作ります。昔はこの地域では各家庭でうどんを打つのが当たり前だったそうで、そのような食文化に触れられるのもここならではの楽しみです。
