Fireworks have been enjoyed in Japan for centuries. Records of them exist from as early as the 15th century, and by the Edo period (1603–1868), they had become popular among ordinary people. From the Meiji era (1868–1912) onward, new technologies were introduced from abroad, which reportedly led to the development of the vibrant fireworks we see today. By the way, there are several companies in Fukushima Prefecture that have been manufacturing fireworks since the early Meiji period. Following such a long history, firework festivals have now become one of the symbols of summer in Japan. The venues are always full of people dressed in yukata (which they rarely get the opportunity to wear otherwise), enjoying the various food stalls. From children to the elderly, the moment everyone looks up at the night sky illuminated by fireworks, they are captivated, and the whole crowd seems connected.

日本の花火には数百年にわたる歴史があります。15世紀にはすでに記録があり、江戸時代には庶民の娯楽として広く楽しまれるようになりました。明治時代以降には海外から新しい技術が取り入れられ、現在のような鮮やかな花火へと発展したそうです。ちなみに、福島県内には明治時代前半から花火を製造している会社が数か所あります。そのような長い歴史を経て、花火大会は今や日本の夏を代表するイベントとなりました。普段は着る機会の少ない浴衣を身にまとい、打ち上げ前から屋台を楽しむ人々で会場はにぎわいます。子どもからお年寄りまで、誰もが夜空を見上げ、次々と輝く花火に魅了され、その場にいる人々の気持ちが一つになる気がします。

Fukushima Fireworks Festival / ふくしま花火大会

The "Fukushima Firework Festival", which helps mark the height of summer in Fukushima City, is held at the Shinobugaoka Ryokuchi Park, located at the confluence of the Abukuma and Matsukawa rivers. Today, the festival has become a beloved summer tradition for local residents. Approximately 8,000 fireworks are launched into the night sky; the reflections dancing on the river's surface and the massive rapid fire of dozens of fireworks are among the main highlights of the festival. Since this was the very first Japanese firework festival I ever attended, I still clearly remember that evening, preparing with my international student friends while double-checking how to properly put on our yukata, as well as the sight of the very first firework rising into the air. Every year, the venue fills with families and groups of friends enjoying the summer evening, offering a festival experience that evokes a nostalgic sense of a classic Japanese summer. Food stalls line the venue, while reserved paid seating as well as shuttle bus services are also available.

福島市の夏を彩る「ふくしま花火大会」は、阿武隈川と松川の合流点に広がる信夫ケ丘緑地で開催されます。この大会は市民に親しまれる夏の行事となっています。約8,000発の花火が打ち上げられ、特に川面に映る光や夜空いっぱいに広がるスターマインは見逃せません。私にとって初めての日本の花火大会だったので、留学生の友だちと夕方に浴衣の正しい着方を確認しながら準備していたことや、会場で見た最初に上がった色鮮やかな花火を、今でもよく覚えています。毎年、夏の夜を楽しむ家族連れや友人同士の姿も多く、どこか懐かしい日本の夏を感じられる大会です。会場には屋台も並び、有料観覧席やシャトルバスも用意されています。

Iwaki Fireworks Festival / いわき花火大会

The "Iwaki Firework Festival", a major summer event representing the port town of Onahama, takes place at the waterfront Aquamarine Park. Approximately 12,000 fireworks illuminate both the night sky and the ocean surface, with the powerful, booming echoes resounding across the harbor being one of the festival's defining features. Highly artistic, custom-designed creative fireworks are especially popular, and the spectacular light displays spreading across the sea are worth seeing at least once. In 2026, under the theme "To a Radiant Future: Connecting 60 Years of History Through Light", a special commemorative program will be featured to mark the 60th anniversary of Iwaki's incorporation as a city. Additionally, visitors who couple the festival with the "Iwaki Odori Onahama Festival" held the night before, or the "Onahama Kaiyūsai" held the previous week, can fully immerse themselves in the summer. This event is highly recommended for those looking to enjoy not just the fireworks, but also the vibrant energy and relaxed atmosphere unique to a seaside town.

Note: The firework festival will be canceled under the following circumstances: if an earthquake of seismic intensity of "5” or higher occurs in Iwaki City; if a tsunami warning is issued or remains in effect for the coastal areas of Iwaki City; if wind speeds reach 10 m/s or higher, or rainfall reaches 30 mm/h or higher; or under any other conditions where the event organizers deem it unsafe.

港町の小名浜を代表する夏の一大イベント「いわき花火大会」は、海辺のアクアマリンパークを舞台に開催されています。約12,000発の花火が夜空と海面を鮮やかに染め上げ、港に響く大きな打上音がこの大会の特徴の一つです。デザイン性の高い創作花火が特に人気で、海上に広がる光の演出も大きな見どころです。2026年は「輝く未来へ 〜光でつなぐ60年の軌跡〜」をテーマに、いわき市市制施行60周年を記念した特別プログラムも予定されています。また、前夜の「いわきおどり小名浜大会」や前週の「おなはま海遊祭」とあわせて訪れると、港町が祭り一色に染まる夏の雰囲気を体感できます。花火だけでなく、海辺の街ならではの開放感や賑わいも楽しみたい人におすすめのイベントです。
