Located in Tamura City within the Nakadōri region, Abukuma Cave (“Abukuma-dō”) is one of Japan’s premier limestone caves — a mystical underground world millions of years in the making. Across its nearly 4km length (including the public sections), you can enjoy a landscape of diverse stalactites and the stunning natural artistry created over countless years. The cave was formed when limestone — once part of the ancient seabed — rose to the surface and was gradually carved away by rainwater. Inside, you can get an up-close look at the passage of time through icicle-like stalactites. The sheer scale of the cavernous halls is a unique atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. The first time visiting, I found myself moving slowly through the cave, but my camera was working overtime, since I just couldn't stop taking pictures.

中通りにある田村市の人気スポット「あぶくま洞」は、悠久の時が生み出した幻想的な空間が広がる、日本有数の鍾乳洞です。全長（公開部を含む）約4kmの洞内には、多彩な鍾乳石が連なり、自然が長い年月をかけてつくり上げた造形美を満喫できます。かつて海の底にあった石灰岩が地上に現れ、雨水によって少しずつ溶かされることで、この複雑な洞窟が形成されました。洞内では、つららのように垂れる鍾乳石の造形などを間近に見ることができます。巨大な洞穴もこの場所ならではの魅力です。私は初めて行った時、ゆっくり歩きながら夢中でシャッターを切っていました。

The 600m “Standard Route” is an easy-to-walk course with a few ups and downs. It features a series of impressive highlights, including the 29m high “Takine Goten” hall and the beautifully illuminated “Tsuki no Sekai” (“Moon World”), where lighting recreates the colors of a sunrise and sunset. For those seeking a bit more excitement, the “Discovery Route” branches off midway, offering a more active experience where you’ll navigate narrow passages and climb ladders. Regardless of which path you choose, proper footwear is key, and I would recommend comfortable shoes. Even in the height of summer, the cave stays a cool 15℃, so bringing a light coat will ensure you stay comfortable throughout your visit. Having visited in the summer myself, I can safely say that bringing a jacket was definitely the right call.

600mの「一般コース」は、多少の上り下りがありつつ、気軽に見学できるルートです。高さ約29mの洞穴「滝根御殿」や朝日から夕暮れまでを表現する調光演出が美しい「月の世界」など、印象的な見どころが続きます。途中から分岐する「探検コース」では、狭い通路を進んだり丸太のはしごを渡ったりと、よりアクティブな体験が可能です。どちらのコースも大切なのは靴選びで、歩きやすいシューズをおすすめします。夏でも洞内は15℃前後と涼しいので、上着があると安心です。実際に夏に行ってみて、「ジャケットを持ってきて本当に正解だった！」と心から思いました。

After your tour, you can find a variety of unique souvenirs at the rest house “Kamayama” gift shop. They carry Tamura City goods such as freshly pressed “egoma” (perilla) oil or wild grape cheesecake, and a particularly rare find is the cave-aged wine. Because it is aged slowly at a cool temperature, the wine develops a remarkably mellow flavor, making it a fantastic gift. You can also find sake aged right inside the cave.

見学のあとは、レストハウス釜山の売店でユニークなお土産が手に入ります。田村市の商品である「生しぼりえごま油」や「山葡萄チーズケーキ」などがそろい、なかでも洞内で熟成されたワインは珍しい一品です。低温でじっくり熟成されたワインはまろやかな味わいになり、他にはないプレゼントにもなります。鍾乳洞の中で熟成された日本酒もあります。

In addition, from June 13 to July 5, 2026, about 20,000 lavender plants come into full bloom at the Abukuma-dō Lavender Garden. During this time, you can usually enjoy a lavender-picking experience (fee-based).

さらに、2026年6月13日(土)から7月5日(日)までは｢あぶくま洞ラベンダー園｣で約2万株のラベンダーが咲き誇り､摘み取り体験(有料)もあります｡
