Fukushima offers a wide range of hiking routes, including mountains that even experienced climbers can fully enjoy. This time, however, I will focus on a selection of mountains that are relatively easy and beginner-friendly.

福島県には多様なハイキングルートがそろい、上級者でも満足できる山があります。今回はその中でも、登山初心者向けの気軽に登れる山をご紹介します。

Mt. Karō (Karōsan) / 鹿狼山

Mt. Karō is famous for having the earliest “yamabiraki” in Japan. The reason is simple: from the summit, one can watch the first sunrise of the year as it rises over the Pacific Ocean, which draws many visitors on New Year’s Day. While you need to watch your footing during an early morning hike, the sunrise is definitely a major highlight of this mountain. At the top sits “Karō Shrine”, and from there you can look out over the Pacific, spot passing ships, and even see the distant Oshika Peninsula. On the western side, the Zao mountain range is also visible. Beyond the ocean views, the mountain is located right on the border between Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, which is also quite interesting. With an elevation of only 430 meters, it’s a relatively low mountain, making it accessible enough for beginners. Near the trailhead, there’s a hot spring facility called “Karō no Yu”, where you can relax in an “onsen” and have a meal, making it a perfect stop after your hike.

鹿狼山は日本一早い山開きが行われます。その理由は、山頂から太平洋に昇る初日の出が見られるので、元日に多くの人が訪れるからです。早朝の登山では足元に注意が必要ですが、美しい日の出を楽しめるのがこの山の魅力の一つです。山頂には鹿狼山神社があり、太平洋の船や遠くの牡鹿半島(おしかはんとう)を眺められます。また、西側には蔵王連峰(ざおうれんぽう)が見えます。鹿狼山は海を一望できるだけでなく、福島県と宮城県の県境を行き来できることも面白く、標高430mの里山なので初心者でも気軽に登れます。登山口の近くには「鹿狼の湯」という日帰り入浴ができる温泉があり、食事もできるので下山後に立ち寄りたい施設です。

Mt. Ryōzen / 霊山

Mt. Ryōzen, a symbol of Date City, rises to an elevation of 825 meters. At its summit once stood the large “Ryozen-ji” temple, which at its peak housed over 3,000 monks and was a major religious center. Today, the well-maintained trails offer sweeping panoramic views of the Azuma and Adatara mountain ranges, as well as the Pacific Ocean. On the “Easy Scenic Route”, one climbes a ladder to a viewpoint overlooking the vast “Kinkakei” gorge. The “Popular Adventure Route” takes you past a variety of unique rock formations, while the more demanding “Full Traverse Route” (taking over four hours) leads to the ruins of Ryōzen Castle. Whether it is the colorful blossoms of spring or the vivid contrast of deep greenery and clear skies in summer, Mt. Ryōzen is a rewarding destination in any season.

伊達市のシンボル、標高825mの霊山。山頂には、かつて大きな寺院「霊山寺」があり、最盛期には3,000人以上の僧侶の住まいが並び、重要な宗教の中心地でした。現在は登山道が整備されており、吾妻・安達太良連峰や太平洋を望む大パノラマを楽しめます。「気軽に絶景コース」では、梯子を上り、錦霞渓(きんかけい)という渓谷を見渡せる展望スポットにたどり着きます。一方、「人気の冒険コース」は多彩な奇岩を巡り、「本気の縦走コース」は4時間以上かかるやや健脚向けで、霊山城跡へと続きます。霊山は、春には花が山を彩り、夏には深い緑と澄んだ空のコントラストが美しく、季節を問わず訪れる価値のある山です。

Mt. Bandai (Bandaisan) / 磐梯山

Bandai is a 1,816-meter mountain straddling Inawashiro Town, Bandai Town, and Kitashiobara Village. There are six trailheads in total, with the “Happōdai” route that is especially popular due to its gentle elevation gain and relatively easy path to the summit, making it easier for beginners. It was on this very route that I first realized the appeal of hiking, after coming across a natural hot spring along the way. Since this is one of the more approachable trails in the area, it might spark interest in hiking in you, too (keep in mind the full course takes around four hours, so basic preparation is needed).

磐梯山は猪苗代町、磐梯町、北塩原村にまたがる標高1,816mの山です。登山口は全部で6か所あり、その中でも「八方台登山口」からのコースは山頂までの高低差が少なく、登りやすく、初心者でも楽しめる人気のルートです。私はこのルートで自然の温泉を見て、山登りの楽しさを初めて知りました。比較的登りやすい方なので、一度挑戦すると山登りが好きになるかもしれません（とはいえ、往復で4時間程度かかるため、基本的な準備は必要です）。

* Keep in mind that in some areas of Japan, submitting a “tozan-todoke” (climbing registration form) is required. It helps authorities locate you quickly in case of an emergency. On many trails, you can submit it at a box at the trailhead or online in advance. Remember to check the essential items to bring when hiking and follow the rules of each trail.
