Winter Drinks of Fukushima / 福島の冬の飲み物

This winter has been quite cold, and it's only natural to want to warm up thoroughly. In Japan, there has long been a custom of drinking hot tea in winter to keep the body warm. Roasted varieties such as “hōjicha” and “genmaicha”, with their fragrant and mild flavors, are still classic choices. However, with changes in modern lifestyles, coffee has become increasingly popular, and I sometimes feel it may now be enjoyed even more often than tea. During the cold season, it is also nice to enjoy flavors unique to each region. Here, I would like to introduce three drinks that are commonly enjoyed in winter by the Japanese people around me.
今年も冷え込む季節になり、とにかく体をしっかり温めたくなります。日本では昔から、冬になると温かいお茶を飲んで体を温める習慣があります。ほうじ茶や玄米茶のような香ばしくて飲みやすい日本茶は、今でも定番の冬の飲み物です。とはいえ、現代はライフスタイルの変化もあり、コーヒーの人気が高まっています。お茶よりもよく飲まれているかもしれないと、最近思うようになりました。それでも、寒い季節にはやはり地域ならではの味も楽しみたいです。今回は、私の周りで冬によく飲まれているドリンクを３つご紹介したいと思います。
Amazake / 甘酒
“Amazake” is one of Japan’s classic winter beverages. It is a drink with hundreds of years of history, made by fermenting rice. Many varieties contain no alcohol, making it suitable for everyone from children to adults. In Fukushima, there is a wide range of producers and styles. For example, Kōriyama-based “Hōraiya” offers a convenient PET-bottle version called “Hyakunen Kōji no Amazake,” while Yamatsuri Town’s “Yazawa Brewery” makes a “Blueberry Amazake Konruri” among many others. In winter, warming it up is one of the best ways to enjoy amazake.
冬の代表的な飲み物には、甘酒があります。アルコールが入っていないタイプも多いので、子どもから大人までどなたでも味わえます。福島には多様なメーカーと種類があり、例えば、郡山市の「宝来屋」が出している手軽なサイズのペットボトルの「百年糀のあまざけ」、または矢祭町の「矢澤酒造店」による「こんるり ブルーベリー甘酒」など、品揃えが豊富です。もちろん、冬には温めて飲むのがおすすめです。
Oshiruko / おしるこ
Another winter favorite that comes to my mind is “oshiruko”. It is a dessert made from boiled azuki beans and sugar, usually served with mochi. Since its name includes the character for “soup,” some view it as a drink, while others think of it as food. It essentially offers the best of both worlds. Sweet red bean soup is rare outside Japan, making it an unusual combination internationally. In Japan, it has a long history, and many people crave it once winter arrives. If you want to try different “oshiruko” varieties, I recommend the “and3” series from “Kōriyama Seian”, designed for microwave heating. Among them, the “matcha oshiruko” offers a fresh take on the classic flavor.
次に思い浮かぶのがおしるこです。「汁粉」と書くので「飲み物」に当てはまるという意見や、お餅が入っているので「食べ物」だという声も聞かれる二刀流の楽しみがあります。小豆と砂糖を使った汁物は外国ではあまり見られなくて、珍しい組み合わせです。日本では長い歴史があり、冬になると必ずと言っていいほどドリンクコーナーに並びます。おしるこのバリエーションを楽しみたいなら、郡山製餡の「and3」シリーズがおすすめです。電子レンジで温めるタイプです。中でもこしあんの抹茶おしるこは新しい味わいだと思います。
Milk-Based Drinks / ミルク系
Cocoa and milk tea are enjoyed all over the world, and within this category Fukushima has a particularly popular local product: “Rakuou Café au Lait.” It is so well-known in Fukushima that many people only realize it is a local specialty after leaving the prefecture. Its mild sweetness and easy-to-drink coffee flavor make it a favorite. There are many other varieties as well, such as “Rakuou Strawberry au Lait” and the rich milky decaf “Rakuou Yasashii Café au Lait”. The drinks can be enjoyed chilled in summer or warmed in winter. Adding cinnamon or topping them with marshmallows makes these drinks even better, so I encourage you to give them a try.
ココアやミルクティーは世界中で親しまれている飲み物ですが、このカテゴリーにも福島発の人気商品があります。それは「酪王カフェオレ」です。福島ではおなじみで、県外に出て初めてご当地商品だったと気づく人もいるほど身近な存在です。まろやかな甘さと飲みやすいコーヒー風味が人気です。他には「酪王いちごオレ」やミルク濃厚でカフェインをカットした「酪王やさしいカフェオレ」など、種類は数多くあります。夏はそのまま、冬は温めて飲めます。お好みでシナモンをかけて、又はマシュマロをのせて飲むとおいしいので、ぜひ試してみてください。
