The northern region of Fukushima Prefecture is well-known for its juicy summer peaches; however, many other fruits are grown here throughout the year as well. Along the Fukushima Prefectural Road number 5, also called the “Fruit Line”, you will find numerous orchards and wholesale fruit stands. This area is a basin where the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures enhances the natural sweetness of fruits, and local farmers have taken advantage of this for decades to grow delicious peaches and Asian pears.
Nowadays, many orchards around the Fruit Line sell produce directly and invite visitors to pick and eat fresh fruits on-site, which is a popular outdoor activity in Japan. The picking season begins in early summer with cherries, followed by peaches, which have become a symbol of the whole region. In autumn, you can harvest Asian pears, grapes and apples. Here is one of the best-known orchards in the area which offers fruit-picking experience.
福島県県北地方は夏のジューシーな桃で有名ですが、実は一年を通してさまざまな果物が栽培されています。「フルーツライン」として知られている福島県道5号沿いには、果樹園と直売所がたくさん並んでいます。盆地であるため、昼夜の寒暖差のお陰で糖度の高い果物ができる地域です。地元の農家はこの環境を活かし、何十年も前から美味しい桃や梨を育て続けています。
現在、フルーツライン周辺にある多くの果樹園は、農産物の直売に加えて新鮮な果物の収穫体験を提供しています。これは日本で人気のアウトドアアクティビティの一つです。フルーツ狩りのシーズンは初夏のさくらんぼから始まり、県北地方の代表的な果物である桃へと続きます。秋には和梨、葡萄、りんごの収穫体験を楽しめます。今回は、この秋にフルーツ狩りができる代表的な果樹園を紹介します。
Marusei Orchard / まるせい果樹園
This large orchard welcomes visitors in September with sweet soft Kōsui pears and mildly tart Hōsui pears, while Nijusseiki and La France varieties ripen in October and November. Kyohō grapes can be picked from mid-September. For apples, Marusei Orchard offers such October varieties as dark red Akibae, juicy Yōkō and Shinano Sweet, followed in November by honey-sweet Pineapple, and flavorful Sanfuji. You can also enjoy fruit parfaits at the "Mori no Garden" cafe.
この広々とした果樹園では、9月は甘くて軟らかい幸水梨と程よい酸味のある豊水梨が育ち、10月と11月は二十世紀梨とラ・フランスが実ります。葡萄の巨峰は9月中旬から収穫できます。リンゴは、10月には濃い紅色の秋映（あきばえ）、ジューシーな陽光（ようこう）とシナノスイートが、11月には蜜が入りやすいパインアップルりんごと風味豊かなサンふじが熟します。敷地内のカフェ「森のガーデン」にてフルーツパフェも楽しめます。
