A unique luxury of Fukushima is how the season unfolds over three full months, from July through September, as peaches of different varieties ripen one after another. One of the most fascinating aspects of these peaches is how drastically their colors and textures differ. In fact, anyone living in Fukushima will probably encounter a lighthearted local debate during the summer: “Do you prefer your peaches soft or crunchy?” — the so called “team soft” vs “team crunchy” phenomenon. While many people associate peaches with a soft, meltingly juicy texture, Fukushima also cultivates varieties that offer a crisp bite similar to an apple or a pear. Remarkably, many of these firmer varieties boast an even higher sugar content. To help you navigate this rich landscape, I have prepared an overview of six of Fukushima's most distinctive peach varieties.

福島市、伊達市や桑折町など、主な産地がある県北地域は盆地らしい気候で、夏は非常に暑く、強い日差しをたっぷりと受けます。昼の暑さと朝晩の涼しさによる寒暖差が、甘みがしっかりと果実にのる理由の一つだといわれています。7月から9月までの約3か月間、多様な品種が次々と登場するのも、福島ならではの贅沢だと感じています。桃の大きな魅力は、品種によって色も食感も驚くほど異なることです。福島で暮らし始めると、夏には「柔らかい桃と硬い桃、どっちが好き?」という「やわ派」対「かた派」の楽しい論争を耳にするようになります。一般的に桃といえば、熟して柔らかくジューシーなものをイメージしますが、福島ではリンゴや梨のようにパリッとした硬い食感を楽しめる品種も栽培されています。しかも、そのような品種の多くは糖度も高めです。今回は、個性豊かな福島の桃の中から、特に特徴的な6品種をまとめました。

Hatsuhime / はつひめ

This is Fukushima's original variety, marking the beginning of the peach season. While early-season varieties are typically small, this one breaks the mold with its impressively large size and delicate, soft flesh. Akatsuki / あかつき

This is the prefecture’s flagship peach variety, accounting for nearly half of Fukushima's total peach production. Historically, it was considered notoriously difficult to cultivate due to its tendency to produce only small fruit. However, through relentless trial and error, Fukushima's farmers and research institutions continued experimenting, and eventually mastered the technique to grow them large. Cultivated without paper bags, they receive plenty of sunlight; this variety features a dense, firm flesh that delivers an exquisite balance of rich sweetness and just the right touch of acidity. 県内生産量の約半分を占める圧倒的なトップブランド品種です。昔は実が小さくなりやすい性質から栽培が難しい品種とされていた歴史があるそうです。しかし、福島の農家さんと研究機関が諦めずに試行錯誤を重ね、大玉を実らせることに成功しました。太陽の光をたっぷり浴びる「無袋栽培」で育った「あかつき」は、果肉がぎゅっと詰まっていて、濃厚な甘みと程よい酸味のバランスが絶妙です。（収穫時期：7月下旬〜8月上旬頃）

Madoka / まどか

Another large-fruited variety born from the highly popular “Akatsuki”, this peach is beloved for its elegant, sweet aroma and lovely flesh tinged with a delicate pink hue. In contrast to its gentle appearance, its signature feature is a remarkably firm texture. With flesh that is slightly crisper than that of “Akatsuki”, it offers a satisfying, substantial bite paired with a bold, robust sweetness. Kawanakajima Hakutō / 川中島白桃

This staple variety is the second most widely cultivated in the prefecture, right after “Akatsuki”. Known for its firm, substantial flesh and excellent shelf life, it is a favorite for both growers and consumers. Despite its firmer texture, it surprises with an impressive abundance of juice that floods the mouth with every bite. For those on “team crunchy” who value a satisfying texture, this bold, richly juicy peach is an absolute must-try. (Harvest period: mid-August to early September)

Ōgontō / 黄金桃

Its flavor profile differs slightly from the classic white peach; when left to ripen at room temperature, it develops a meltingly soft texture and a rich, tropical aroma.
