Ja no Hana Gardens

“Ja no Hana” is a wonderful place to sense the changing seasons, and locals have loved it for a very long time. Originally, the area is a countryside hillside at the foot of Mt. Ōnagura. In the late the Heian period (approx. 1086–1185), it was called “Ya no Hana” (“arrow flowers”), as the arrows shot in all directions by a prominent samurai Minamoto during a battle here were said to resemble blooming flowers. Its history as a park began around 1900s, when a wealthy farmer named Wataru Itō built his weekend manor here, along with an orchard and a beautiful garden. Right from the start, he opened it to the public. Today, the garden is run by a private company, and a small, dedicated team of four staff members takes care of all the beautiful plants.

大名倉山の麓に広がり、四季の変化を楽しめる「蛇の鼻」は、地元の方に昔から親しまれている場所です。かつて平安時代後期には源義家がこの地で戦った時に四方へ放たれた矢が花のように見えたので「矢ノ花」と呼ばれていました。明治30年代に豪農伊藤彌氏の別邸と果樹園、美しい庭園ができたのが始まりで、当時から一般公開されていました。現在は民間企業が運営しており、4人のスタッフが植物の管理を行っています。

The park is a traditional walking garden, where you can see about 300 different kinds of plants. One of the main highlights is a massive wisteria trellis. It is around 400 years old and is officially designated as a natural monument of Motomiya City. Flowering season starts in April, and the blooming wisteria in May is iconic to this place. In the summer, about 10,000 water lilies bloom across the pond, creating a scenic, photographic view. And the autumn leaves in November are another absolutely stunning view. After your walk, trying the locally famous white miso manjū (small buns) or miso oden at the teahouse by the pond is highly recommended.

「回遊式庭園」の園内には約300品種もの植物が植えられ、4月からさまざまな花を楽しむことができます。見どころの一つは、本宮市の天然記念物にも指定されている、樹齢約400年の大フジ棚で、特に5月のフジが見事です。初夏には擂鉢池(すりばちいけ)に約一万輪のスイレンが咲き、水辺いっぱいに花が浮かぶ風景は写真撮影にぴったりです。秋には紅葉が園内を彩ります。散策の後は、「蛇の鼻茶屋」の白みそまんじゅうや味噌おでんもおすすめです。

Interview

I spoke with Mr. Watanabe, a staff member who handles plant maintenance, garden’s PR, and art projects here. Now in his third year, he helps maintain the grounds while using his creative skills to introduce fresh artistic touches to it. He started this job in the winter without any experience. On his very first day, it was freezing and snowing, and he had to prune the massive wisteria trellis without knowing anything yet — a sharp learning curve. However, he has been gaining experience and keeps studying every day, saying, “You have to care for everything, from the trees to the soil bacteria and weeds, to make beautiful flowers bloom”. The work is not easy. For example, in June, over 3,000 azaleas bloom, which requires a lot of attention; watering and pruning are also never-ending. He also makes sure to mow the grass early in the morning before guests arrive, so the noisy machines do not ruin the peaceful sound of birds singing.

今回、ここで植物管理、広報、そしてアート企画を担当しているスタッフの渡邉輝夫さんにお話を伺いました。ここで働き始めて3年目になる渡邉さんは、庭園の管理を担当する一方で、自身のアートのスキルを活かして園内に新しい表現を取り入れています。未経験でしたが、冬にこの仕事を始め、初日は雪が降る寒さの中、知識もないまま大フジ棚の冬の剪定作業を行い、大変なスタートだったそうです。しかし経験を重ねる中で、「樹木だけでなく、土の菌や雑草にも気を配らないと美しい花は咲かない」と日々知識を深めています。作業は決して簡単ではなく、例えば5月には3,000株以上のツツジが見頃を迎えるため、手入れが欠かせません。日々の水やりや剪定という手間のかかる作業も必要です。さえずる鳥などの自然に配慮しながら、お客様のいない早朝に草刈りをしているそうです。

Mr. Watanabe also handles the garden’s social media, aiming to create a friendly atmosphere that appeals to younger people as well. He has also been painting since he was around 18 years old. Now, he uses his artistic skills inside the park by turning dead trees into beautiful chainsaw art and painting murals on the walls. He constantly creates fun artwork that makes visitors smile, like cute characters made from summer cypress bushes or creative designs from fallen autumn leaves. To take advantage of the quiet morning hours, Mr. Watanabe often arrives at “Ja no Hana” at around 5:00 or 6:00 AM. He happily shared, “This is my precious time where I can focus on making pieces I love. When I wake up in the morning, I get so excited thinking about what interesting things I can create today”.

他に、渡邉さんは広報やSNSの発信を通じて施設のアピールに力を入れ、若い世代にも親しまれる雰囲気作りを意識しています。さらに、園内で枯れてしまった樹木をチェーンソーアートで蘇らせたり、壁に絵を描いたりしています。コキアを使ったコキアアートや秋の落ち葉アートなど、訪れる人が笑顔になるアートワークを次々と制作しています。朝の静かな時間を活かして、5時や6時頃から園内で作品作りに取り組むこともあります。「好きな作品作りに集中できる大切な時間。朝起きると、今日何か面白いことをやろうとテンションが上がる」とうれしそうに語ってくれました。

The connection with visitors is also growing each year. Some people see his social media posts and drop by just to say “I came to meet you!” and even international influencers visit the park. He mentioned that visitors from abroad especially love the autumn leaf art. He also shared a touching story about meeting a 98-year-old woman who had visited the park long ago on her honeymoon. She said, “I might not be able to see the autumn leaves next year” — and those words really stayed with him. Treasuring these connections, Mr. Watanabe wants to create special seasonal attractions to make the park a wonderful place for families and a fresh new date spot for younger generations.

来場者との交流も広がっています。SNSを見て「会いに来たよ」と声をかけてくれる方や、海外のインフルエンサーが訪れることも。海外の旅行客には特に落ち葉アートが人気だそうです。かつて新婚旅行で訪れたという98歳のおばあちゃんとの出会いもあり、「来年の紅葉は見られないかも」という言葉が印象に残ったそうです。渡邉さんは、縁を大切にし、若い世代にとって新しいデートスポットに、また家族連れも楽しめる場所となるように、季節に合わせたコンテンツを提供したいと言います。

At the “Ja no Hana Goten” manor I was amazed by the incredible level of craftsmanship. The doors and pillars feature detailed wood carvings, and even the hidden areas have beautiful decorations, showing the high skills of the craftsmen back then. Inside, you can see many rare types of wood, and even the floorboards are made of precious materials. Black persimmon wood is especially rare. It only turns black through a natural mutation, appearing in about just one out of every 3,000 persimmon trees. Mr. Watanabe said, “I sometimes sit at the top of this spiral staircase. For some reason, this space is very calming and feels nostalgic”. Even though it was a hot day, the inside of the building remained breezy, and the air was crisp and cool.

「蛇の鼻御殿」では装飾技術の繊細さに驚きました。扉や柱などには細かな木彫りが施され、あまり目立たない部分にも美しい細工があり、当時の職人技の高さが伝わってきます。珍しい木材が多く見られ、床板にも貴重な木材が使われています。特に珍しいのが黒柿です。柿の木の突然変異によって生まれる木材で、3,000本に1本ほどの確率でしか現れないそうです。渡邉さんは「このらせん階段は、登りきった場所に時々座るんです。この空間はなぜか落ち着いて、懐かしい感じがする」と話しました。気温が高い時期でしたが、御殿の中は涼しく、空気がひんやりとしていました。

As we walked through the different areas of the lush green garden, peaceful views open up everywhere. Mr. Watanabe shared one of his favorite spots, saying, “Sitting on the benches in the barbecue area is incredibly relaxing. You can clearly hear the birds singing, and it is so healing”. In the summer, the blooming water lilies on the pond, the fresh green maple leaves, and the roses on rainy days are absolutely beautiful. He also mentioned that the “komorebi” — sunlight filtering through the leaves — of wisteria and looking at the autumn Japanese maple leaves up close are another charm of this place. The spot where you can feed the koi fish is always a big hit too.

緑あふれる庭園の各エリアを歩くと、のんびり過ごせる景色が広がります。「バーベキュー広場のベンチに座っているとすごく落ち着く。鳥のさえずりがよく聞こえて癒される」と渡邉さんはお気に入りのスポットを教えてくれました。夏は、擂鉢池(すりばちいけ)に咲き誇るスイレンや青もみじ、雨の日のバラなどが立ち止まるほど美しいです。フジの花の合間からこぼれる木漏れ日や、間近で見られる紅葉の季節も魅力の一つだと言います。鯉に餌やりができる場所もいつも人気を集めています。

While walking around, I also got to see Mr. Watanabe's artwork. A chalk graffiti drawing of a snake blends naturally into the scenery while adding a fresh vibe to the garden. The wooden snake sculpture carved with a chainsaw and a two-seater bench crafted from a uniquely shaped fallen tree were also very impressive. Additionally, he uses a small boat as an aquarium to raise “medaka” (rice fish). The outside of the boat is covered with hundreds of messages left by visitors, making it a piece of art that everyone builds together. These art projects blend seamlessly into Ja no Hana's classic landscape, introducing a fresh, creative element to the traditional scenery.

散歩の途中で、渡邉さんの作品も拝見しました。チョークで描かれた蛇のグラフィティは自然の風景に馴染みながら、庭園に新鮮な雰囲気を加えています。チェーンソーアートで作られた蛇の彫刻や、不思議な形の倒木を活かした2人掛けのベンチも印象的でした。さらに、作品として小さなボートをアクアリウムとして利用し、メダカを飼っています。ボートの外側には来場者が書いた何百ものメッセージが残されており、作品の一部となっています。このようなアートワークは、古き良き原風景をとどめる「蛇の鼻」に新しいクリエイティブな魅力を少しずつ加えています。

Finally, when I asked him how he wants first-time visitors to spend their time here, he gave a wonderful answer: “Ja no Hana is very spacious, so I actually want people to explore and find their own special photo spot or their own peaceful place to relax. I hope they enjoy searching for it as they walk around”.

最後に、初めて訪れる来場者にどのように過ごしてほしいかを尋ねると、素敵な答えが返ってきました。「蛇の鼻はとても広いので、その中で自分だけの撮影スポットとか、自分だけの癒される場所を探しながら歩いてほしいと思います」。

“Ja no Hana” is a peaceful place that preserves a classic, nostalgic landscape while gently changing its atmosphere through art, so why not visit and find your own favorite spot?
